We had a few teething issues and problems and I nearly lost the faith, so when I woke up this morning with no heat at all I was at my wits end. Jon responded immediately to my somewhat emotional voice message and had a senior tech at the house in less than an hour. He found the problem (manufacturer hadn’t tightened a valve and water and electrics don’t mix) grabbed the part and fixed it within a couple of hours. All under warranty and no charge. Unfortunately, there are many disadvantages to stone houses. They are slow to build and the materials are pricey, both of which balloon the total cost. Stone walls require a more robust foundation, which costs more to install. Running plumbing, electrical, and HVAC through a stone house is much more difficult too, so homeowners need to seriously consider if the aesthetic benefit is worth the cost of building with stone. One of the questions to ask a masonry contractor is if a similar aesthetic can be achieved with another material.

You should worry about brick wall cracks when they are wide and growing, or in a horizontal or stair-step pattern. Additionally, they may be accompanied by other signs of structural stress. In these cases, a foundation specialist should inspect your home.

Yes, technically, you can pressure wash the paint off of brick. However, you run a much greater risk of damaging the brick and causing serious problems. If you go this route, you’ll still need to carefully choose and apply a chemical paint stripper before washing, following all instructions on the product packaging. Set your power washer to a low pressure to avoid damage.

You will repoint over a fraction of the old mortar, but you should scrape away 1/2 to 1 inch of mortar from the joints before repointing. Otherwise, the repointing is only masking the weakened mortar instead of actually replacing it, which could put your chimney at risk of bigger, more expensive damages later on.

It is possible, albeit a lot slower, to break up a rock using water. You would do this by freezing and thawing the water. You could create some initial holes or cracks in the rock, then pour water into the cracks or holes and allow them to freeze (so it's best to do this in winter or in colder climates). Since water expands when it freezes, this puts pressure on the inside of the rock and causes it to crack. You could continue to pour more water in and let it freeze to continue to break up the rock.
