"Highly recommend calling Jim for any roofing needs! Not only is the job quality extremely well done (and fast!) but Jim takes the time to educate you, work with you and provide reasonable estimates. They check with you after work is complete and make sure it's all in tip-top shape. If you need a new roof, advice on next steps with a roofing issue - R&S Roofing is the place to call!"

"I am very happy with the new roof. Daryl, the sales rep, communicated everything very nicely and made sure that I was given the best option for my roof. Mike, Devan, and Walter were the project managers and they were very helpful throughout the roof install. I wasnâ t able to communicate very well with the roofing crew but the project managers made sure that all of my concerns were taken care of."

"Competitive pricing, Quality premium level architectural shingles, Quality of work, Hard working people tear down and install roofing in one day and cleaned up debris on the same day. "The crew was very accommodating, courteous and professional. They covered the shrubs, they picked up all debris, they arrived at 8:30am and finished up the project around 7:00pm just taking a lunch break. I would definitely recommend American Standard Roofing. They beat all bidders and I had 5 separate estimates. Arnie, Chris and Chuck were terrific working with me on the different shingles. I chose the CertainTeed Landmark Weathered Wood, a little more in cost but worth it, even the roofing crew said I made the correct choice."

Roofing questions, answered by experts

Once framing is complete, you will need the following materials to roof a house:

  • Wood sheathing

  • Drip edge, a.k.a metal flashing

  • Underlayment for waterproofing

  • Roof covering, like metal or asphalt shingles

A tarp can temporarily stop a roof leak, but how long the solution works heavily depends on the placement and size of the leak. While a tarp can be a temporary solution, it’s crucial to have a professional inspect and repair the leak as soon as possible to implement a permanent fix.

The principal, common, and auxiliary rafters are the most frequently used types of rafters. Principal rafters are large and typically appear toward the edges of the roof. Common rafters are smaller than principal rafters. Some people may use a mix of common and principal rafters. The auxiliary rafter is not common, but it provides extra reinforcement for a principal rafter on a large building.

An improperly installed skylight could potentially impact your roof's warranty. This happens because roofing penetration is necessary during skylight installation. Check your warranty information to verify. In most cases, having skylights professionally installed with proof that flashing is being done to specifications can be enough to preserve your roof's warranty.

The short answer is, yes, cedar shakes do last longer than asphalt shingles. But the long answer is, it depends on maintenance. Asphalt shingles last about 20 years, while cedar shingles typically last about 30 years with proper maintenance. If they are very well maintained and installed in an area with a mild, drier climate, they can last up to 50 years.
