"Our interior design project went great. We converted a living space to a formal dining room. Natalie helped us with layout, lighting, and window fixtures to help complement our dining table. She had great suggestions for accessories and furniture to make our room more elegant and to our taste. Highly recommend her and Patricia Interiors!"

"We met with Patricia and Roz for help with our living room. We needed help with layout and purchasing furniture. We received several design ideas and were able to chose our layout from the drawings created. The three designs were fantastic!! We had a hard time choosing one, since they were all great designs. We ended up going with a rustic-contemporary design, which we would've never come up with on our own. Patricia and Roz helped us every step of they way, from drawings, design, layout, and purchasing our furniture and accessories. Loved that we were able to visit the design center in Troy and pick out all of our pieces and have them custom made to the design specifications. I would highly recommend Patricia Interiors. Our living room turned out absolutely beautiful."

Interior Design and Decorating questions, answered by experts

Hiring a high-quality interior decorator should always start with reading through online reviews to see the kind of experience other homeowners have had. You can narrow down your search and then ask the remaining companies for references and examples of their past work. It’s during this stage that you’re likely to find a company that suits your specific tastes and one that has experience with the style you want to bring into your home. You should consider calling references to ask about the process and the homeowners’ experiences with the decorator before, during, and after service.

While the terms 'interior designer' and 'interior decorator' are often used interchangeably, they represent distinct professions with some overlapping work. The primary difference lies in the scope of their projects.

An interior decorator focuses on the aesthetics of a space, making less permanent decisions about decor. Their work involves selecting colors, fabrics, furniture, wall art, paint, and other finishes to 'dress' a room and enhance its style.

An interior designer has a broader scope that includes a decorator's aesthetic focus but also extends to the structural and functional aspects of a space. Designers are qualified to plan layouts, make structural changes, and manage overall functionality. They handle permanent decisions regarding fixtures like cabinets and bathtubs, establish floor plans, and may hire contractors.

Due to the technical skills required, interior designers typically have formal education, certification, and may hold a license, which can result in higher fees. As a general rule, it is best to hire an interior designer for major remodeling projects and an interior decorator for projects focused on establishing or refreshing a home's interior style.

If you need help with your holiday decorating, the first step is determining your lighting and decor needs to narrow down your pro options. For example, if you want a custom outdoor light display with all of the bells and whistles, you’ll likely need to hire a local holiday light installer who specializes in that service. But if you only need to hang some lights inside in hard-to-reach places, consider hiring a handyperson or an interior decorator instead. It’s best to contact at least three different companies for quotes and to find out what services they offer.

Universal design is a design concept that states that products, spaces, and general environments are designed to be used by everyone, with an emphasis on accessibility for those with limited mobility or other special needs.

You can hire a few different experts to redesign a kitchen. The best option depends on your goals, budget, and timeline. For small updates, we recommend hiring a contractor who specializes in kitchen renovation. For extensive updates, a general contractor might be your best bet since they’ll have experience with all aspects of the remodel. If you’re looking for more ideas in the planning stage, you can hire an interior designer or a kitchen remodeling company. Both options will help you thoroughly envision your new kitchen before the remodel begins.
