"Daniel Green was very professional. His bid was reasonable. He and his crew did an excellent job. They painted an entire 2,200 sq ft condo in three days. Ceilings, trim, doors, and two coats on the walls. They protected floors, windows, light fixtures, handles and blinds while painting. I highly recommend Daniel Green."

"Home Specs did everything I was hoping in repairing the leak in my basement wall. Mike was friendly and informative about the process and finished the job in a few hours. I used Home Specs before for a different crack and feel comfortable that they guarantee their work. BTW when I first called they were able to send an estimator within days and set up repair shortly after."

"We needed a textured ceiling made smooth again in our great room-kitchen-hallway area. The ceiling is vaulted, about 17 feet at the peak, no easy task. We asked them to move a light fixture, build/blend a new wall where there was partial stair railing, and smooth all wall imperfections throughout the area. There were 2 teams, one did drywall/ceiling and built the wall, after that the painter finished the entire area. Everyone was very friendly and worked hard to complete it all in a short amount of time. We are very satisfied with the work they did and highly recommend them!"

"We hired Aden and his crew to install two windows near our kitchen on a wall that previously hadn’t had any. Aden patiently worked with us to find a solution within our budget and began work ONE DAY after signing the contract—well ahead of the timeline we had expected. From start to finish, he was responsive, accommodating, and enthusiastic about our vision. We are quite pleased with his work and would not hesitate to contact him again for future projects!"

"They did a great job! They explained the process; however, I did not fully understand how it worked but I can tell you, it did fully work! We waited until we had sufficient rainfall just to make sure before we did the wall repair. I highly recommend this company. They were here on time and kept us informed every step of the way!"

Wall Repair questions, answered by experts

Rebar is a steel support that goes inside concrete to prevent structural damage over time. Concrete is susceptible to impact, weight, and tension. By inserting rebar into the concrete during the installation, you can help extend its lifespan and avoid hazardous situations where the foundation of your home gives way to tensile forces.

Costs depend on material type, labor rates, and additional features like decorative finishes or reinforcement.

Poured concrete is often the cheapest material for a retaining wall, costing around $6 to $8 per square foot. Other budget-friendly options include vinyl and landscaping timbers, which range from $10 to $15 per square foot; landscaping timbers are particularly well-suited for DIY projects. Untreated timber and railroad ties are a step up in price, starting at $15 to $25 per square foot. Natural stones can also be a cost-effective choice if you can source them from your own property, but they can be expensive to purchase. High-end materials like steel are typically the most expensive but offer superior durability and aesthetics.

Each design is different, so we can’t say definitively if you’ll need a dedicated drainage system in place for a two-foot retaining wall. However, you can likely skip the drainage, as this project is typically served for walls that are 4 feet tall or more. Even with a relatively low wall, consider drainage if you are building on top of clay or poor-draining soil types or if there are buried water sources nearby, like a well used for other outdoor garden projects.

Most railroad tie retaining walls have a life span of 20 to 30 years, though you may need to replace your wall sooner if it’s repeatedly exposed to heavy rain, runoff, and excess moisture. Railroad ties are typically treated with creosote, which makes them much more durable than untreated wood. Though they last longer, they don’t last forever. For the most longevity, make sure your retaining wall has a sturdy base and steel reinforcements. You should also install drainage to direct water away from the wall.
