"Crawford's Drywall did an excellent job of fixing the plaster walls & ceiling area of my steps to the second floor of my 100+ yr old home. Drywall/plaster are very messy jobs but the crew did a good job of cleaning up at the end of every day. The area looks so much better. Very professional, courteous, and respectful of my property inside and out. I would have no problem hiring them again."

"Daniel Green was very professional. His bid was reasonable. He and his crew did an excellent job. They painted an entire 2,200 sq ft condo in three days. Ceilings, trim, doors, and two coats on the walls. They protected floors, windows, light fixtures, handles and blinds while painting. I highly recommend Daniel Green."

"We needed a textured ceiling made smooth again in our great room-kitchen-hallway area. The ceiling is vaulted, about 17 feet at the peak, no easy task. We asked them to move a light fixture, build/blend a new wall where there was partial stair railing, and smooth all wall imperfections throughout the area. There were 2 teams, one did drywall/ceiling and built the wall, after that the painter finished the entire area. Everyone was very friendly and worked hard to complete it all in a short amount of time. We are very satisfied with the work they did and highly recommend them!"

"We hired Aden and his crew to install two windows near our kitchen on a wall that previously hadn’t had any. Aden patiently worked with us to find a solution within our budget and began work ONE DAY after signing the contract—well ahead of the timeline we had expected. From start to finish, he was responsive, accommodating, and enthusiastic about our vision. We are quite pleased with his work and would not hesitate to contact him again for future projects!"

"They did a great job! They explained the process; however, I did not fully understand how it worked but I can tell you, it did fully work! We waited until we had sufficient rainfall just to make sure before we did the wall repair. I highly recommend this company. They were here on time and kept us informed every step of the way!"

"The two men came Friday at 2:00 pm and quoted me a price. They said they could get a job done by dark and I gave them the go ahead. They repaired our chimney and was done in 3 hours. They were really good workers and did a super job. It rained last night and no leaks in the garage last night. We really would recommend them for chimney repair. I would give them a 10 out of 10. Thanks Angie for Shamrock Chimney Repair Co."

Wall Repair questions, answered by experts

Generally speaking, a retaining wall should be between 3 and 4 feet high, depending on variables such as the wall-building material, the purpose of the retaining wall, and more. If you want your retaining wall to be taller than 4 feet, check with your local building ordinance office for the maximum allotment. You may also need a special permit for retaining walls over 4 feet tall.

Most retaining wall installations can be finished in one to three weeks, but the timeline varies based on factors like wall size and material. The local climate and major weather events, such as storms or flooding, can also extend the project's timeline, as can any holds ups in the permitting process.

There are contractors specifically trained in the design and construction of retaining walls. Retaining wall contractors are skilled at dealing with the soil on your property and assessing what kind of drainage should be installed. They will recommend the best materials to use for the project and can handle the processing of permits by local authorities.

Railroad ties can be good for retaining walls, but it depends on the area. They have a desirable rustic look and are durable. The problem is they’re treated with creosote, a preservative the EPA says poses a risk to humans and wildlife. Over time, the preservative seeps out of the wood and into the ground. Many areas have banned the use of creosote-treated wood on residential properties. If your area does allow it, never use railroad ties near an edible garden or drinking water source. Instead, use wood that’s treated with an EPA-approved preservative or a wood-alternative composite material.

Most railroad tie retaining walls have a life span of 20 to 30 years, though you may need to replace your wall sooner if it’s repeatedly exposed to heavy rain, runoff, and excess moisture. Railroad ties are typically treated with creosote, which makes them much more durable than untreated wood. Though they last longer, they don’t last forever. For the most longevity, make sure your retaining wall has a sturdy base and steel reinforcements. You should also install drainage to direct water away from the wall.
