The most common defect in a flat roof is leaking. Flat roofs have minimal slope, so water pools more readily on a flat roof than on a sloped roof, and the risk of the waterproof membrane failing increases with exposure. You can only overlay a roof once. Any additional layers of shingles will add too much weight and may also violate building codes. Once your roof has had an overlay, you’ll need to have a full roof replacement, including a tear-off of all existing roofing materials, when it’s time for a new roof. 

Roofing felt is the most common type of roof underlayment, likely because it has been around the longest. It’s called roofing felt because it is often made of felt soaked in asphalt. Depending on the type of roofing a home has, roofing felt comes in different thicknesses. 

If properly installed and maintained, roofing felt should last between 10 and 25 years. 

The green coloration that develops on copper roofs is called a “patina,” and it’s a result of mild oxidation on the surface. The oxidation process is not harmful to your roof. In fact, the surface corrosion acts as a protective layer and won’t spread to the core of your copper roof materials. The discoloration will progress much more quickly in damp or humid climates than it will in dry climates. If you don’t like the green color, you can seal your roof to preserve the shiny, rose-gold look.

You should plan on waiting as long as it takes for the roof deck to dry out completely if it gets wet. In most cases, this will take about 24 hours, but it could take longer if you have shading on your roof or cloudy weather after the rainfall that prevents the sun from drying the material.
