HVAC systems push air around, causing dust and dirt to accumulate. Some dirt around air vents is normal, but if you notice a significant accumulation in a short time, that indicates a problem with the system. Clean the vent covers, replace the air filters, and call in a pro for an inspection.

To knock debris loose inside the ductwork, you may need to use a hand-operated brush or a rotary brush. You then can use the vacuum to suck up the loose debris and remove them from the ducts. If mold is present, pros may use a chemical spray to try to kill any bacteria or mold inside the system.

There should be a lever outside the duct that you can open and close. In the horizontal position, it’s open, and in the vertical position, it’s closed.

You will know if your furnace needs cleaning if your furnace seems to be working less efficiently than normal. You may notice your bedroom is chilly, but the living room is extremely warm, or perhaps the furnace isn’t heating the house properly at all. The furnace may also make weird noises, like bangs or whistles, or emit a rubbery or smoky smell when it is dirty.
