"They were great! Allen and Mike made my lawn and driveway look great. They communicated throughout the project, asking me questions to make sure everything turned out the way I wanted it. They are professional and I am very happy with the work they did."

"We wanted our yard regraded, retaining walls repaired, and large boulders moved. The end result exceeded our expectations. They listened to what we wanted and offered some great suggestions. They showed up on time every day and completed the project early. Would definitely use them again and recommend them to anyone looking for a landscaper."

"I thought they were just coming to give me a quote, but instead they dug right in--literally they dug out two nasty stumps and roots from some overgrown shrubs that my husband was unable to get out. It was such a joy working with young men that are so polite, efficient, and hard working--not to mention quick and reasonable. If we have any landscaping projects that need to be done in the future, you can be sure I will be calling Great Lakes Lawn Care."

"I contacted this company at 8am for a demolished mailbox. I was told they would be there at noon. They showed up right on time. They dug out the old post..through the snow…purchased a new post and mailbox, plus cement to stabilize it. I had a new mailbox by 2pm. It was a very professional job. I would highly recommend them for your projects."

Excavating questions, answered by experts

You should dig 3 to 6 inches deep for plastic edging. Dig as wide as you need to fit your plastic edging into it—2 inches is usually sufficient.

As a general rule, the protected area should be about 1½ times as wide as the canopy of the tree’s leaves. This digging measurement can vary by tree species and the age of the tree. Of course, that can be a lot of fencing for larger trees, which is why our first step is about making difficult decisions on which trees to save.

You do not have to dig footers for a deck as long as it meets local code and holds up to weather in your area. If you live somewhere that experiences high winds and earthquakes, you may need to dig for your deck posts. Deck blocks, post anchors with base plates, and helical pile systems are the three no-dig deck post options you can choose from if local code permits.

Hardscaping often requires preparation of the ground in the area where the feature is being installed. This can include digging, compacting, and leveling the soil, ensuring adequate drainage, and removing any existing plants. The extent of preparation needed will depend on the type and size of the hardscaping feature being installed.

Trenching is a specific kind of digging. Trenching means digging a depression in the earth that’s deeper than it is wide, often with heavy machinery. Digging refers to any kind of removal of earth in order to create a human-made depression, hole, or cut in the earth’s surface. You can dig with big tools or even with just a hand shovel.
