"I had two basement windows that needed to be replaced. (They were originally installed in 1961. One had broken glass, so the guys came into a mess.) They did a great job. They removed both old windows, cleaned, prepared both openings, installed the new windows, created beautiful mortar casements around the windows and sealed everything. They look absolutely beautiful. I had previously purchased an area wall cover and had dug part of the hole for this. The crew saw what I had done and they took over, finished digging the hole, installed the wall cover, put dirt around the cover and put a good amount of decorative stone in the bottom. As far as clean up is concerned, the guys cleaned up everything when they finished. The basement looks as good as new. The windows are beautiful. This is definitely a start to making the basement more enjoyable. My expectations were not only met, but exceeded. I will definitely contact Ayers for further basement improvements. You can use hot, soapy water, white vinegar, rubbing alcohol, window cleaner, nail polish remover, WD-40, and cooking oil to remove glass labels. You can also apply heat with a hair dryer or steam cleaner. Use a plastic scraper or credit card to remove the adhesive, as a razor blade can permanently scratch your glass.
For small, non-pressure-related cracks, you can fix them using two-part epoxy. This spares you the cost and hassle of replacing the glass. Simply clean the surface and remove any debris or dirt, wait for the glass to dry, then spread an even layer of mixed epoxy solution over the crack. You can use a putty knife or rubber spatula to push the epoxy into the crack.
The methods outlined here are intended for surface scratches—ones that don’t cut into the glass very deeply. For deep scratches, you should consider a more comprehensive glass scratch repair kit. These kits come with abrasives, polishing compounds, and specialized tools designed for removing deep scratches from glass. If you feel uncomfortable tackling a deep scratch on your own, consider calling a local glass repair contractor.
Black spots on the bottom or along the edge of your bathroom mirror are caused by oxidation behind the mirror glass. When moisture and air are trapped between the glass and the backing, they react and cause discoloration. This is sometimes referred to as “mirror rot.” You’ll need to separate the glass and the backing to fully remove it.
The best way to pack mirrors is to use specially padded cartons or boxes made for mirrors. Be sure to thoroughly wrap the fragile mirror in padded paper or bubble wrap before sliding it into its box. That way, there’s a protective barrier in between the mirror and the box. Then, fill in any gaps with crumpled paper or additional packing materials.
