"Ashley and her team at Coastal Finish are truly exceptional. Iâ ve hired them for a number of services at my cottage: interior/exterior painting, as well as power washing and staining of my exterior deck. Ashley is prompt, highly communicative and the quality of work is unbeatable. I really appreciate how the team takes a personal interest in ensuring all jobs are done with the upmost care and attention to detail. Coastal Finish differentiates themselves through customer service and quality in work. They show up when they say theyâ re going to, are very fair in their assessment and pricing, and will go the extra mile to ensure the job is done beautifully, timely and to complete satisfaction. "Exceptional, the soft wash process was amazing for our deck. I was wrong for being skeptical when my wife described the technology, our deck is so clean and no wood splintering from a powerwash. The sidewalk and drive cleaning was just as surprising. I had forgotten the drive could look that great! Power washing the siding removed molding and other unsightly imperfections that grow on siding. Will absolutely use â  Wash Doctorâ  again!!!"

Deck Maintenance questions, answered by experts

It is possible to build your own deck, but it’s typically better to leave the work to a decking professional. Decks can be exceptionally complicated, especially if you want a wrap-around or second-story deck, and you don’t want to risk making an expensive or dangerous mistake. It’s usually better to hire a decking pro who can pull permits and build a structurally sound deck that will last for decades and provide the maximum return on investment.

It is recommended to clean your deck once or twice a year to prevent the accumulation of dirt, debris, mold, and mildew. The ideal times for cleaning are in the spring and fall. A spring cleaning removes grime that has built up over the winter, preparing your deck for summer use. A fall cleaning washes away messes from summer activities, preventing them from setting into the wood over the winter. The exact frequency can depend on factors such as how often the deck is used, its exposure to pollen, and whether salt was used on it during the winter. Regular cleaning helps protect the wood and its finish from damage.

As with patios, there are many types of deck choices to choose from to add personalization to your home. Some common deck options include:

  • Attached decks are anchored to the home and include simple ground-level options or multi-level structures with stairways and separate landings.

  • Detached island decks are not attached to the home; they’re a freestanding structure in the yard.

  • Wraparound decks connect the back of the house with at least one other side and often are built with railings for safety.

  • Multi-level decks connect your deck through varying levels of elevation, featuring landings that are attached to stairs.

Pressure-treated decks last 15 to 20 years on average, but with proper maintenance, you could get 40 to 50 years of value from yours. Reseal your deck every one to two years, and replace old or rotted wood as soon as possible to avoid structural damage. Where you live plays a role in the lifespan of your deck. Intense sunlight, rainfall, wind, and hail can reduce the deck’s lifespan.

Although composite decking is extremely durable, it’s also susceptible to extreme heat. Prolonged exposure to sunlight can cause fading, warping, and cracking. Composite also retains heat more than wood, which makes it dangerous to walk on in the summer. You can help prevent heat damage by only building with composite in shaded areas or using rugs to cover the hottest spots.
