"Darwin showed up on time and did a good job. It had been close to 20 years since the deck was built and hadn't been treated at all. The deck was driftwood grey with lots of dark mildew or some other crud. When Darwin was done, it looked just like new! We only had him do the washing, not the sealing, as my husband wants to stain it himself."

"Ashley and her team at Coastal Finish are truly exceptional. Iâ ve hired them for a number of services at my cottage: interior/exterior painting, as well as power washing and staining of my exterior deck. Ashley is prompt, highly communicative and the quality of work is unbeatable. I really appreciate how the team takes a personal interest in ensuring all jobs are done with the upmost care and attention to detail. Coastal Finish differentiates themselves through customer service and quality in work. They show up when they say theyâ re going to, are very fair in their assessment and pricing, and will go the extra mile to ensure the job is done beautifully, timely and to complete satisfaction. I wish all service providers delivered like Coastal Finish!"

"Careful sanding and painting of deck. That deck refinishing done by Vitali was tops. Although weather and employee shortage delayed the project, Jimmy made up for it by communicating well and in a reasonable way. He provided updates as each job before mine on the list was completed, so that I could estimate when it was my turn. I plan to remain their customer."

Deck Maintenance questions, answered by experts

In the majority of cases, you don’t need regulatory permission or permits to remove decking components and materials. However, the exception is if you live in or near a wildlife conservation area, which could require permits and consent prior to beginning the demolition. Check with a local regulatory agency for more information.

Yes, you can attach a deck to a mobile home, but it’s important that the work be done correctly to avoid the potential for major damage to your home. Many building codes require that any additions to mobile homes—including decks—be either freestanding or have their own support structures. Getting permits may require submitting the home's original floor plan, the proposed floor plan, framing details, and more.

Your deck may look or feel fuzzy after pressure washing because the high-pressure spray tears some wood fibers as it removes the outer layer of dead and discolored wood. This fuzzy effect is a normal part of the pressure-washing process and will go away on its own in a few weeks. You can opt to spot-sand your deck if you’d like to remove it more quickly.

Most building codes list a minimum width of 36 inches and a maximum height of 7¾ inches. However, for the most comfort and spaciousness, you’ll want to aim for a width of at least 48 inches and a height of 7 inches. Again, it’s always a good idea to base your numbers off steps that you already use comfortably.

It’s best to prime composite decking before painting. This promotes better paint adhesion, helps create a smooth finish, and can mean the paint job will last longer. Always follow the manufacturer’s instructions for application, allow ample primer drying time before painting (typically 24 to 48 hours), and thoroughly clean the deck boards to promote the best adhesion.
