Exhaust fans push air out of spaces, removing moisture, heat, odors, and pollutants. They vent air outside through ducts, preventing mold and improving air quality. Unlike ventilation fans, which circulate fresh air in and out, exhaust fans focus solely on expelling unwanted indoor air.

You should generally avoid using WD-40 on a ceiling fan. While it might quiet a squeak temporarily, it is primarily an anti-corrosion and water displacement agent, not a true lubricant, and can damage the fan's components over time. Most modern ceiling fans have sealed bearings and do not require oiling, so a squeak may indicate another issue. For fans that do require lubrication, it is better to use a light machine oil, 30-weight motor oil, or a lubricant specifically designed for ceiling fans.

While it may seem like it makes sense to put a fan in the attic to cool it down, it won’t be as effective as installing attic fans. Ideally, you should run blower fans and a dehumidifier, as this will allow the fans to move dry air over your damaged building materials, drying out the space even more quickly.

Once you remove all standing water and puddling, you should run fans for 24 to 48 hours to remove the remaining moisture. For severe water damage, it’s a good idea to run them for three to four days to be safe. Make sure you buy or rent the proper size and number of fans for your water-damaged area.
