"I contracted DeGain Masonry to do a paver patio in my back yard. The finished project turned out better than I could have ever expected… very precise and meticulous. Clint was quick to return my calls, started and finished the project when promised and was more than accommodating in every way. I am a particular customer with high expectations of those I hire. That being said, I would highly recommend DeGain Masonry."

"They did a great job leveling out and cleaning up my paver patio. Small family business, one son met me for the estimate and his brother did the job. Both professional and friendly. Thank you!"

"DiMambi Construction was professional throughout the entire job of installing our new concrete driveway. They were friendly and performed their work in a timely manner taking care of every detail. No short cuts were taken. They cleaned up after themselves and our property nicely when they finished. We are very pleased with the exceptional concrete work they completed. We would highly recommend them to anyone needing concrete work."

"I contacted The Crack Team for foundation wall crack waterproofing after finding water near our utility lines and basement corner. They arrived on time, answered all my questions, and did clean work. What impressed me most was how respectful and honest the crew was throughout the whole process. The leaking stopped completely and the area looks great now."

"Project leader - Art - was great to work with. Everyone associated with the project was low pressure and lived up to their commitments. 3 man crew show up on time, got done early, and cleaned up area before leaving. Only drawback was pricing but quality of the project helped offset higher cost."

"These guys are the real deal for professional masonry repairs. I purchased a 10 yr old home that had numerous cracks in 8 3ft stone columns on my patio. They were able to take the cracked mortar out and add mortar between the stones that matched the aged look of all the mortar between the stones. Now, my patio looks great! ...and they were great to work with, wanting to make sure you were satisfied."

Masonry questions, answered by experts

According to the Earthquake Country Alliance—a public and private alliance in California that works to improve earthquake and tsunami readiness—reports that unreinforced masonry, such as stone, bricks, and hollow clay tiles, is more susceptible to earthquake damage. The mortar between bricks isn’t as stable as other building materials and methods.

Spalling brick is not uncommon, but it does indicate a serious issue. It can be caused by water damage, an intense freeze-thaw cycle, or something else. Painted bricks can be susceptible to spalling, as the paint doesn’t allow the porous material of the brick to breathe, which can trap moisture. Spalling should always be addressed immediately before more serious structural damage occurs.

Yes, concrete is significantly stronger than masonry, especially if the concrete pour includes reinforcements, like steel rebar. Concrete is a uniform material that can withstand compression, sheer force, and tensile force as long as it’s reinforced. Masonry involves the use of mortar or grout to connect individual building materials, like brick, stone, or tile. Mortar and grout are also reasonably strong and resist compression well, but they don’t come close to the strength of poured concrete.

Yes, you can cut patio stones with a circular saw. Similar to using an electric grinder, you will need to use a diamond blade as this is the most effective blade for cutting a material like stone. The stone must be wet when using a circular saw to ensure the cut is smooth.

You can use adhesive strips to hang lights on brick—just make sure you get outdoor mounting tape and not just any old double-sided tape for your project.
