If you’re painting your home or monitoring a job as it’s being completed, squash the issue ASAP if you notice paint is getting onto the roof. Keeping it clean is one of the keys to extending your roof’s life.

Removing latex paint before it dries is much easier and lowers the risk of damaging your shingles (more on that below). Simply spray the spot with a hose for one to two minutes to clear away the drying paint. In general, this is a good way to remove ugly stains from your roof without using chemicals.

The best time of year for roof cleaning depends on the climate in your area, but in most cases late spring or early summer are the best times. You should plan to clean your roof when it’s dry and not too hot or cold. It’s also a good idea to clean your roof in the late autumn to remove any built-up debris like leaves or branches. On the other hand, you shouldn’t clean your roof when it’s too cold, because you can cause ice buildup.

One upside of tile roofs is that clay, concrete, and slate tiles require fewer repairs and less care than most other roofing options and are considered low-maintenance materials. Aside from as-needed repairs, annual inspections, and routine gutter cleaning, your tile roof won’t demand any maintenance and can provide 50 to 100 years or more of worry-free protection for your home.

It may require stronger cleansers or chemicals, higher-pressure spray, or scrubbing to completely remove algae from a metal roof. Start with a mild cleanser; if that doesn’t work and you're comfortable doing so, use a stronger mix of ⅓ cup of laundry detergent, 1 quart of bleach, and 3 quarts of water to gently scrub the algae with a soft-bristled brush. If algae is present across large portions of your roof, doesn’t come off with gentle scrubbing and cleansers, or is in hard-to-reach areas, this may be a job better left to a pro.

The best way to clean a roof without damaging it is to opt for soft washing, or better yet, leave it to a professional roof cleaner. Soft washing involves a biodegradable cleaning solution being sprayed on the roof and gently rinsed away after it dissolves built-up residue on your shingles.
