David did a great job! We were really pleased and had to talk him out of tearing it out and doing it again. He saw what he considered an imperfection that we could not even see in direct sunlight! He cleaned everything up very well. He maintained the agreed-upon price even after some unexpected complications. He did not come the first time that he said and did not call until that evening. It was not an issue for us, but an earlier call would have been better. Good guy who does great work at a fair price!

Quality of work was excellent.  Once he started the job, everything went well.  The only negative was that it took him quite a few weeks to start the job once we signed a contract with him.  A lot of the problem had to do with all the rainy days.

David Nelson is a very professional fellow.  He listened to the needs that I had to cover a cracked concrete front stoop and one step with Ohio Blue flagstone to match a walkway that was recently added.  When I first contracted with him his work schedule was such that he couldn't start for about 4 weeks.  He gave me a very fair quote and a 50% payment was made.  Although David was 3-4 days late in starting, he had accessional rationale.  Once he got started, he battled a terrible scourge of mosquitos and a very rainy week to get the work done.
I was unhappy with how recessed one stone in the center of the top step was.  I mentioned it to him and he professionally corrected the stone to my satisfaction.  He is very kind, soft-spoken, professional and conscientious.

He completed both tasks  to our satisfaction and cleaned up and removed all debries  from both work areas in a very professional manner. We intend to call on him for more work in our house in the future.

Excellent service.
He answered my call instantly and came to my place within 2 hours.
He did an excellent job of filling the gaps between the cinder blocks in my crawl space.

Dave Nelson failed to complete the work.  Shortly after cashing my check for deposit, he began to make excuses for delays.  He originally told me it would take a day and a half to complete the work.  As of this writing, seven weeks have elapsed.  When he started the job, he removed some bricks for replacement as contracted to do.  For nearly two weeks, however, my house had holes due to missing bricks because Mr. Nelson did not replace the bricks with new or used ones in a timely manner.  He said he was searching for bricks even though when hired he told me he had matching bricks.  After several phone calls and text messages, he finally returned to fill in the holes with bricks.  But a couple bricks were mortared into place even though they were recessed and not flushed with the foundation.  Plus, the mortar is not consistent in color and even covers over part of the bricks in a noticeably sloppy condition.  I contacted Mr. Nelson about the problem and he said he would come back to fix it as well as to complete the other work.  He never did.  I am now faced with suing Mr. Nelson for breach of contract and hiring someone to repair and complete the work.

UPDATE: David Nelson cashed my check for deposit but did not perform the contract.  After posting a complaint on 10/29/13, Mr. Nelson agreed to return my deposit following the company's poor workmanship on my house.  However, Mr. Nelson again, did not keep his word and has neither returned my deposit nor fulfilled the work as contracted to do.  Mr. Nelson did sloppy brickwork by not leveling some bricks or centering with the correct mortar to brick ratio.  Mr. Nelson had the audacity to ask me to remove my complaint from Angie's List in exchange for money.  For months, Mr. Nelson has not ameliorated the shoddy work his company has done.

Dave is very straightforward to work with.  I got a quote from him in August, and after dragging my feet for about a month, I called him to give him the go-ahead, and to my surprise he came over that evening to get started.  When I came home from work the next day, I had new concrete.  There were a few clean up issues that were dealt with the next morning.  Overall everything was very good.  The reason I marked professionalism as a B is that a couple of our landscape lights were smashed at some point during the job.  After a little negotiating, Dave subtracted $20 off our bill to compensate, which seemed reasonable, but I still have to fix/replace those lights.

He was delayed due to a pryor job but when I called and asked about the service he picked up his work and came over within an hour.  The prior job kept adding "stuff" for him to do.  Work begain immediately and I couldn't be happier.  He was a very nice young man and he explained everything he was doing.  String and levelers were used so that the brick work was perfectly aligned.  Upon completion the brick 1/2 wall looked better than it ever had.  He was knowledgeable, friendly, and completely competent.  I referred him to our neighbor where he corrected a water problem in their chimmney.  My neighbors were also completely satisfied and found him to be as easy to work with as we did.  I am having him back later in the year to repair work on my chimmney.  I cannot say enough about his work ethic.  The only problem is not hearing from him about when he was going to show up after the original estimate date was set.  It was well worth the wait.  The result was superior in my opinion and I did not have to pay for a boatload of workers as most of the work was performed by him.

Dave did a good job at a reasonable price.  He was a bit slow getting started and finishing, but I was clear I was more interested in a good job than a fast job, and he had some other project that was pulling a bunch of his time.  He also did a nice job capping the steps coming down from the porch.  I would use Dave again.

David called and sent an email on Saturday August 10 stating that he could start the job around noon on that day. He arrived and began cleaning brick that we had salvaged from when the house was built in 1977. He placed a tarp over some adjacent windows to protect them from dust and old flying mortar. This was completed at 5 PM that day.
He returned on Monday and worked for 3 hours in a rainy drizzle.
Came back on Tuesday and completed the job; caulked a seal around the window and cleaned up all of his tools.
The work was completed in a professional manner and we are very satisfied with the results. Not only that but he placed a 15 year guarantee on the work done.

My chimney has been leaking in the inside hall during the extreme rains of April...I found David on Angie's list after interviewing and getting estimates from two other masons...I have just been delighted with the work that David did on my home...During the intense rains yesterday and last night, I had a dry hall/closet...David was very efficient in his estimate...I knew what he was going to do and exactly what it would cost...He had a camera and took pictures on the roof that he could show and explain to me what the problem was...He guaranteed his work and told me that he did the job right the first time and did not have to repeat his efforts...I liked that kind of response...I felt like he cared about the repair of my chimney and did his absolute best to get it done correctly...I have hired him again for three other  projects...He is a real find...

To help control dust, one worker used the masonry saw while the other held a vacuum cleaner to capture as much dust as possible.  I placed a fan at the sliding door to pull dust out of the room.  We also connected the hose from my shop vacuum to the discharge of their shop vacuum and directed the vacuum cleaner exhaust out the sliding door.  A HEPA filteredvacuum cleaner would have been better.

David returned my initial inquiry same day, completed site inspection the following day.  He and employee began the work the following week, arrived on site and began work prior to 0700.  Job took about 2-3 days to complete, David returned within 2 weeks to remove the framework after the concrete cured.  No leak issues with the chimney since completion.  David and employee cleaned all concrete dust and other debris from the yard, deck, furniture and even my potted plants!  I highly recommend David Nelson of DN Masonry.
