Most privacy fences are easy to install if you’re going with a DIY-friendly option like a wood fence, vinyl fence, or pallet fence. Because it's cost-effective and does a great job of keeping pests out and plants in, vinyl is probably the best option for building a DIY garden fence. The material is also easier to work with than metal, which may prompt a homeowner to tackle the project themselves instead of hiring a pro. 

Chicken wire is also a great option to put on top of your vinyl fencing, as it’s budget-friendly and easily accessible.

In most cases, trees need to be protected from deer all year round. This is especially true if you want to protect small trees from deer or if you just planted some fresh, new trees. Once a tree is a few years old, you likely do not have to worry about protecting it from deer as it will be stronger and can handle a little damage.

Generally, the height of your dog fence should be 3 times the distance from the ground to your dog’s shoulder. For most small breeds, a 4-foot high fence will be more than enough to keep them from jumping out. Medium-sized breeds like Golden Retrievers, Labradors, and German Shepherds will need at least a 5-6 foot fence to stay contained. Large breeds that are also excellent jumpers, such as Greyhounds, may need a 7-foot high fence. 

There are two things you can do to make a fence replacement easier—but keep in mind that easier doesn’t mean better. First, you can use a jack or some other type of machinery to pull the post out of the ground. If that’s not available, a digging bar can help.

Second, you can backfill the hole with gravel rather than creating a concrete footing. Keep in mind, gravel is less secure. You should only use it if you’re installing a lightweight fence or have heavier, clay soil.
