"We hired them to help us with the remodel and reconstruction of our cottage and they installed new windows and doors, siding and soffit, built a new deck with handrail and also demolished our garage and built a new one for us complete. Figure out how much tile you need by measuring the backsplash area. Measure the height and length in feet and multiply to get the square footage. Don’t make adjustments for outlets or small cutouts but subtract the square footage for windows or other large obstructions from the total. To account for waste, get 10% more than your calculation.

You cannot tile directly over hot mop waterproofing because tile requires a smooth, solid surface to adhere properly. Additionally, the shower bed pan needs to be raised and sloped toward the drain to prevent water from pooling. However, you can hot mop and apply a sloped mortar bed over the top (to which the tile can then be adhered). 

While you shouldn’t use thinset mortar on its own as a floor leveler, it can work alongside other products to help level floors. For instance, you could start with a self-leveling compound, let that dry, then apply backer board with thinset mortar to help fully even out the floors ahead of laying tile.

Installing kitchen countertop tiles on a mold and moisture-resistant cement backer board is one of the best options. When fitted correctly on top of a plywood base, it’s stable and long-lasting. Old-fashioned cement board is economical, cuts neatly and easily with a circular or jigsaw, and screws into plywood without any difficulty.

Whether you use a brush or roller depends on the size, shape, and amount of tiles. Rollers are easier to maneuver over large areas and can apply a more even coat of paint in a shorter time frame with no visible brushstrokes. Brushes are best for precision work, particularly in very small areas. If you don't want visible brushstrokes on your painted tiles, you can paint details with small foam brushes instead of bristled paint brushes.
