" Josh 's communication skills were impressive especially when most contractors don't find the time to keep their clients aware of delays , schedule changes or simply retuning calls. The work was completed on schedule and there were no surprise fees. We will definitely hire Josh again- he's intelligent, personable and a hard worker."

"Chris designed and constructed a new front walk with stairs for us last summer. Not only was his design better than other competitive offerings, he was willing to modify it on the fly as we changed our mind on several key details. When he began the actual work, he stuck to his schedule and labored diligently, regardless of the weather, to get the job finished in a reasonable time. He found an electrical subcontractor to add the new lighting we wanted and when complete, the new walk was truly beautiful. We could not have been happier. But the best part, is that he did the entire project for much, much less than other estimates we had received. So on time, on budget, and incredible craftsmanship. We could not have hoped for more!"

Masonry questions, answered by experts

Masonry work tends to be more expensive because the materials can be costly, such as natural stone and brick. Masonry is also very labor intensive, typically making up 50% or more of the final project cost. In addition, quality masonry work requires years of training and experience, as with any skilled trade.

No, you shouldn’t lay bricks directly on dirt. While it might seem like a shortcut, it leads to a patio that shifts, sinks, and becomes a maintenance headache. Dirt expands, contracts, and erodes—none of which mix well with long-term stability. To build something that lasts, excavate the topsoil, compact a layer of crushed gravel, and add a coarse sand-setting bed. This layered base gives your bricks proper support, allows drainage, and helps block weeds from creeping through. Cutting corners here just means you’ll spend more time—and money—repairing your brick patio later.

Yes. Black stains are more than an eyesore. Some black stains can pose health concerns, especially for those with asthma, allergies, or other respiratory conditions. Some stains can also damage the brick’s structural integrity, harming the mortar and resulting in more expensive repairs.

If you’re attempting to mix and pour your own mortar, expect to pay between $5 to $10 for an 80-pound bag of mix. The cost to repair mortar, however, can range from $300 to $500 for a 20-square-foot wall. The larger the area and the more extensive the repair, the higher the cost.

Yes, technically, you can pressure wash the paint off of brick. However, you run a much greater risk of damaging the brick and causing serious problems. If you go this route, you’ll still need to carefully choose and apply a chemical paint stripper before washing, following all instructions on the product packaging. Set your power washer to a low pressure to avoid damage.
