Welcome; a little about me. My name is Nick, I've been in and out of the construction world for the better part of the last 15 years doing everything from footings, foundations, and flatwork concrete through finish carpentry and paint. I am well versed in vinyl flooring, tile, drywall, roofing and siding, interior or exterior paint, pest exclusion, remodel and renovation, framing, monoslabs and finish concrete, windows and doors, and many more. During this time, I also attended college for architectural design and development. I have recently decided to stand on my own with the possibility to grow something for the future for my children who all want to learn the trades as well. I am available for quotes and am willing to work either at time and material or bid by the job. I will be uploading and adding pictures of recent work to include the project I am currently working on, which is exterior paint of 140,000ft in grey&black. Although I live in Oxford, ME; travel for work isn't and has never been an issue. I am competitive on pricing and available to work around a budget. The work performed by me can be billed out at time and material or an overall bid cost to suit your financial needs.

Insulation questions, answered by experts

Yes, you can install insulation behind drywall yourself, but only if your walls are not finished. If your studs are exposed, installing fiberglass insulation in roll or batt form is very straightforward and just requires a few tools and some safety equipment. If your walls are already finished and you’re looking to add insulation, it’s better to hire a professional, as you’ll likely need blown-in insulation, which can be dangerous to work with and a challenge to get into the proper areas in your wall voids.

Blown-in insulation works, but only for unfinished attics. Also, it isn’t the longest-lasting nor the most effective option. For better options, look into spray foam insulation or natural fiber batts. They typically have a longer lifespan, better heat resistance, and stronger sound-proof abilities. Spray foam insulation costs about $1.25 to $1.50 per square foot, but can go up to more than $4 per square foot. Fiber batt pricing varies depending on the material.

The cost to install a radiant barrier ranges from $700 to $2,800, depending on the size of your roof and the type you choose. Most people pay an average of $1,700 to install a radiant barrier. Foil options, both single- and double-sided, cost between $0.10 and $0.90 per square foot, while spray-on options start at $0.60 and go all the way up to $1 per square foot—which can add up quickly.

The primary downside of radiant barriers is their limited effectiveness in cold climates. They are designed to reflect radiant heat, making them less beneficial in cooler conditions where heat retention is more important.

Radiant barriers require proper installation to maximize effectiveness. Incorrect placement can lead to minimal benefits. They also do not provide insulation, meaning they should be used in conjunction with traditional insulation for optimal energy efficiency.

There are many reasons one bedroom may be hotter than the rest of the house. The sun will quickly heat a south-facing bedroom with a large window, especially if it lacks quality curtains. If the room has poor insulation, this could let more warm outside air in. Upstairs bedrooms are often hotter than ground-floor rooms because heat rises. Finally, rooms further away from the air conditioning unit may heat up a lot if the system is not properly balanced.
