Winthrop Fuel Company is Central Maine's leading full service heating oil and propane company. We offer heating oil and propane delivery, repair, installation and emergency services.

"I applied for fuel as a tenant and they saw on the application that I was sisters with the property management and sister inlaw to the landlord. They couldn't get in touch with the landlord or manager so they called ME about a vacant unit in the building that was "dangerously low". I just moved from Savannah Georgia and have zero clue who lives here and why I should get a call from a fuel company about my neighbor. Nor should they use me to get in touch with the landlord. SUE WAS INSANELY RUDE WHEN I TRIED TO TELL HER TO CALL MANAGEMENT. SHe couldn't be bothered to hear why I was telling her to call management not me. Instead she wanted to know the address and my unit which didn't matter, mine wasn't in question! Her sharp remarks were enough for me to say, nope, bye. If you move from out of state, expect to get paperwork by mail, return it by mail or be brave and do it in person and get the worst customer experience ever. My fiance was ignored and as he said, "it's like they can't be bothered". I was born in Lewiston and left for Georgia 18 years ago, and expected better, but nothing has changed in this state. Winthrop fuel is terrible and I don't understand why mainers put up with this nonsense."

Gas Leak Repair questions, answered by experts

Most gas companies and utilities brokers will send a technician to relight a pilot light, but this may demand a service call fee. Contact your local gas company to inquire about available pilot light services. If it’s a no-go, just follow the aforementioned steps and light the manual boiler’s pilot light yourself.

No, you shouldn't cap a gas pipe with a compression fitting because they aren't designed for gas lines and can pose serious safety risks. Gas pipes require threaded caps that create a secure, leak-proof seal capable of handling gas pressure. Using a compression fitting could lead to dangerous gas leaks—a hazard you definitely want to avoid.

In North America, pipe measurements are listed as the nominal pipe size (NPS). This measurement refers to the outside diameter. As an example, a 1/2-inch copper pipe has an outside diameter of 5/8 of an inch. If a hardware store lists a pipe as having a 2 NPS, it means that all the pipes with this measurement have a 2 ⅜-inch outside diameter, regardless of wall thickness and inside diameter.

Yes, it’s possible to cap a gas line yourself if you’re no longer using it or are simply going out of town for an extended period of time. It’s essential to follow the steps on properly capping a gas line yourself. If you’re uncomfortable with any of the steps, you may want to bring in a natural gas plumber for added reassurance.

Yes, flexible tubing and high-efficiency gas lines are options for new installations.
