My husband is an architect and pretty much knew what needed to be done to remove a wood burning stove from our fireplace and restore it to a working fireplace before anyone arrived to give us a quote. We had several contractors come by and try to tack on extra unnecessary add ons using scare tactics. Gary from Shamrock came and not only was he honest about what needed to be done he also assessed that we needed some repair work done to our chimney which my husband already knew had to be done. We were very pleased with the removal of the wood burning stove , the chimney repair and his promptness and professionalism. There isn’t a way to convert electric fireplaces easily or cheaply to gas. The process requires major renovations, as opposed to wood fireplaces, which are often already vented and have space for the gas-burning equipment. To convert an electric fireplace to gas, you’d need to remove your old fireplace and get a completely new install.

You should have a licensed plumber to install a gas line for your new gas fireplace. As experts in all things natural gas, these professionals understand how to work with gas safely to avoid explosions, leaks, and other potentially hazardous situations. They also know how to handle the other aspects of the process, including pulling permits, digging trenches, and connecting new gas lines to old lines.

The biggest disadvantage of propane is that heating systems and appliances powered by propane tend to cost more than gas-powered ones. Propane is also dangerous since it can create frostbite if it touches the skin and can easily combust if mishandled. It’s also quite cumbersome to buy or replace propane tanks, so many people choose to have propane delivered to their homes—an extra cost and logistical challenge that can be a headache.

The easiest way to empty a propane tank is to simply use it until no propane remains. If you’re short on time and need a faster solution, transfer the propane to another tank instead. Wear leather gloves to protect your hands, then connect the hoses from both propane tanks and seal them tightly. Turn the knob to open the supply tank valve on the full tank and let it run until the pressure pushes all the propane into the other tank. When all propane is transferred, remove the hose and seal each tank. 

Not all gas fireplaces need a chimney. If you install a ventless gas fireplace, it will release low levels of combustion byproducts back into your living space (instead of pushing them outside through a chimney or vent). Ventless fireplaces burn fuel efficiently, so the emissions are minimal—but they could bother people with allergies or respiratory issues.
