"Rodney Toothaker If you are in the market for a most excellent paint job done by a highly qualified and meticulous crew at a reasonable rate and no hidden costs, Rodney Toothaker at Midcoast Painting and Restoration is your person. He is, not only prompt, efficient and detailed, but personable and warm in that old time Maine way. My husband and I moved back to Maine this winter from Arizona, where we had been perching for the past dozen years and Rodney was the first person we invited into our home to freshen up the condo we had just bought. Rodney made sure it was a thorough welcome by listening to what we wanted and needed and not just what we said. You can tell a business owner is top notch by the way in which his workers act when heâ  s not present. Every last person was way beyond helpful and dedicated to their task. Indeed, these guys almost never took a break. Listening to Rodneyâ  s people as they work, coaching and teaching one another as they solved angle, wall smoothing and edging issues for the most professional look was charming and soul brightening, not to mention rare, especially in the corner-cutting world of today. Weâ  ve never had the opportunity to observe such a well-tuned unit. It was a delight to have them in our home and thatâ  s saying much in little, as we were weary from the move and barely a foot into the state before we decided to paint the entire interior of our new (to us) home. With zero pressure, Rodney pointed out the places that needed the most attention (walls, trim and cupboards) and offered money saving tactics such as what could wait (inside of closets and cupboards and selected ceiling areas). What more can I say? Rodney and his guys are paint brush royalty."

"Highly recommended! We did a kitchen remodel. Don and his son did quality work. Beautiful custom cabinets and woodworking. Easy to work with & even went beyond expectations. They were quick to respond to any messages. We plan on hiring them again."

"I don?t usually write reviews like this, but I had to for Top Notch Construct, LLC. We had luxury vinyl flooring put in throughout our living room, kitchen, and hallway?and the first time I walked in after they finished, I honestly just stood there for a minute taking it all in. It didn?t even feel like the same house. Everything looked so clean, open, and put together in a way it never had before. The living room feels warmer and more inviting now, the kitchen looks brighter, and the way everything flows together just makes the whole space feel bigger. It?s one of those changes you don?t realize you needed until you see it done right. What really meant a lot to me was how easy they made everything. They listened, they cared, and you could tell they actually wanted it to come out perfect?not just ?good enough.? The attention to detail shows everywhere you look. And the best part? Walking in that night when it was all done, no mess, no stress?just brand new floors that completely c"

"Four years ago we had our cabinets and drawers redone. We needed repair of two drawers recently. The project was handled quickly and with the attitude that I was an important customer. Christian oversaw the project, Derrick scheduled us promptly, and Vince did the repairs. They were all efficient and pleasant. I would Recommend Revelare in York, PA, to anyone who wants to update their kitchen."

"Don was very prompt with his response and we had a written quote before he left our house that day. We knew up front what he was going to do and he started work the next day. He always communicated his comings Ang going’s and always asked for feedback as he and his worker continued to paint the rooms, even asking if the color my husband picked out was actually what he thought it would look like. I wish I had taken before pictures, but needless to say the (2) bathrooms and bedroom look amazing and we are so pleased with the work ! We have his business card to contact him in the future if needed for additional work 👍 I would recommend Fine Line Painting for any job he applies for !!"

Closets questions, answered by experts

The differences between a built-in closet and a walk-in aren’t that different from a built-in wardrobe and a walk-in closet. It’s fairly simple—a walk-in closet is a closet you can physically enter, stand in, and walk around in. A built-in (whether wardrobe or closet) is more akin to covered shelves installed into a recess in the wall. Another big difference is walk-in closets almost always have traditional full-size doors, while built-ins either have no doors or use sliding doors.

Yes, many providers offer design consultations to help optimize and maximize space, functionality, and usage. It is recommended to confirm the availability of this service with your specific installer or contractor.

Plywood, MDF (medium-density fiberboard), and solid wood are all popular options for closet shelving. Plywood and solid wood are sturdy and ideal for extended shelves or heavy items. MDF is a budget-friendly choice for light to moderate storage, but it can sag under heavy weight if not adequately supported. Wire shelving is another alternative that allows airflow, making it especially useful in humid spaces such as laundry rooms or basements.

If you’re on a tight budget, the least expensive material you can buy for DIY closet shelves is chipboard, a.k.a. particle board. This inexpensive material is made from a pulp of sawdust, resin, and glue that’s pressed together under high temperature and pressure. As you can imagine, it’s not very sturdy and might buckle under your blue jean collection, so you should only use it if you’re storing very light items.

Yes, adding a built-in or custom closet generally increases your home's value and makes it more attractive to potential buyers. A well-designed closet adds utility, organization, and a touch of luxury, which are appealing selling points. Most homeowners see a return on investment (ROI) of 50% to 60%; for example, a custom closet can add about $1,000 to your home's value on average. The specific ROI depends on the type, with custom walk-in closets typically providing more value than reach-in closets. However, to maximize value, ensure the closet doesn't significantly detract from the room's usable square footage. Converting an entire room into a closet can actually lower your home's value. Similarly, using overly lavish materials may not recoup their cost. A good strategy is to add a closet that takes square footage from a non-living area, such as a garage, to create a mudroom closet.
