"The foreman, Roberto and his crew, Alun and Jose did an excellent job installing push piers to stabilize our foundation. They did a super job of resolving an unexpected problem that was encountered with a footer under a slab portion of the foundation. These men are a valuable asset to your company."

"I was very pleased with the work that was done. Chris and TJ were very professional. They arrived on time every day and made sure things were tidy when they left. They showed me what the three man crew had accomplished each day and informed me of their plans for the following day. Part of the waterproofing job involved a facelift on the cement basement walkout on the side of my house. Joe, who has 30 years of experience with the company, completed this part of the job and I was extremely pleased with the result. Basement waterproofing is expensive, but I felt that I got my money's worth. Everyone who has entered my basement since the job was completed, from my son-in-law to technicians working on my plumbing and heating systems, have commented that I had it done right. It is wonderful to finally have a bone dry basement. I have recommended Basement Waterproofing Nationwide to my neighbors whose home are the same vintage as mine and have been plagued for years by dampness and water in their basements."

"After the waterproofing was done I have been working to replace the paneled walls in my basement that they had to cut 4' up because of my leak areas. To early to tell about the leaking, but so far so good."

Masonry questions, answered by experts

Fireclay is a type of clay but it is a type of clay that, because of its chemical composition, can be fired at a much higher temperature than other clays. This results in a denser and more heat-resistant final material. Because of the high percentage of a mineral called kaolin, fireclay sinks are smoother and more durable than other clay types.

Yes, but used or reclaimed bricks can be more brittle, cracked, or uneven than new bricks, so they’re harder to cut cleanly by hand. For that reason, you should take extra care when scoring and striking, and expect a higher chance of breakage. If a brick feels especially fragile, score deeper before attempting to split it.

Brick spalling—which refers to the crumbly, flaky, or pitted appearance that can develop over time—is caused by a few different conditions. These include:

  • Climates with constant freeze-thaw cycles

  • Use of non-breathable sealants

  • High-pressure water cleaning

  • Improper installation

While you can’t do anything about the weather, you can preserve your bricks by cleaning them with soapy water and a good old-fashioned scrubbing. Pressure washers may be satisfying to use, but they can eventually wear away the surface of your bricks. If you don’t have advanced-level DIY skills in masonry, you can hire a reputable masonry contractor in your area for your project.

It is possible, albeit a lot slower, to break up a rock using water. You would do this by freezing and thawing the water. You could create some initial holes or cracks in the rock, then pour water into the cracks or holes and allow them to freeze (so it's best to do this in winter or in colder climates). Since water expands when it freezes, this puts pressure on the inside of the rock and causes it to crack. You could continue to pour more water in and let it freeze to continue to break up the rock.

Modern brick houses are really stick-built homes with a brick facade for aesthetic purposes only, so most have framing. With genuine brick construction, most homeowners install furring strips over the interior of the brick and then install drywall over those strips to cover the brick wall, so they don’t have traditional framing.
