"Justin did an awesome job building our dock. He solved a few problems we had with the existing dock and reimagined the space to a much more usable pier/dock while working within our existing footprint. We also used for several house repairs and was very pleased with all results. All work was completed in a timely manner and work site was always cleaned up. We were informed every step of the process. I would definitely recommend for dock and any handyman needs."

"We had scheduled our wood floors to be resurfaced with another company, but while the rooms were all cleared out, it was a good time to repair drywall and paint. Henry sent someone immediately to give us an estimate. We only had 5 days to work with before the floors were to be started. His crew started the very next day! All were professional and respectful. They repaired spots we didn't know existed! Henry visited twice, once as the men were working and the next to inspect the completed job. He was available by phone at any time for questions/concerns. Although we thought the price was expensive like other reviewers, considering what they did on the timeline given and the excellent results, we would definitely use them again. We have already given their card to the neighbors."

"Dave has done an incredible job on my basement - sometimes, no - ALL of the time, it was like he was working on his own home. The professional craftsmanship, attention to detail and willingness to avail himself to our schedule was fantastic. The job was a ceiling to floor remodel: studding, drywall, finishing, painting, floor tiling to include a rebuilt powder room and spectacular bar and cabinetry. Even a dance room with 5 foot mirror, a ballet bar and wood flooring was part of the job! This guy can do it all! I looked forward to coming home every night to see the progress he made. It was like one Christmas morning after another! Great guy to work with and competitive prices that are eye-popping for the results delivered. You will not be sorry choosing D&R for your next project."

Carpentry questions, answered by experts

Yes, walls on the top floor can be load-bearing if stacked on the floor’s foundation.

No rules state how much of a load-bearing wall can be removed. Rather, you need to adequately support any area that is removed. Support should always be added to as much wall area is being removed. Failing to support the area properly will result in structural damage.

Most of the time, you’ll want to use screws on your subfloor rather than nails. Nails can actually weaken plywood, whereas screws can easily penetrate without damage. They also form a more secure connection because of their shape, preventing squeaky floors and tightly holding the subfloor in place. That said, some contractors do prefer nails depending on the type of floor covering because they allow for more flexibility.

Baseboards don’t have to be nailed into studs. However, nailing them into studs adds to their stability. When studs aren’t available, you can secure them with drywall nails directly into the drywall and adhesive. Always aim to nail into studs, especially in high-traffic or impact-prone areas.

Your local building code will list all the framing requirements for whatever type of structure you're building. Most exterior walls require spacing of 16 inches on-center, while many non-load-bearing interior walls only require 24 inches of spacing. However, there are also varying requirements depending on your construction material, so checking your municipality's rules is essential.
