"CBJ Home Improvements did a fantastic job on my outdoor living project (enlarging deck, installing screen room, and building a patio). First of all, the workers that built each part of the project were Craftsmen! Each putting in their own expert 'signature' custom piece. Secondly, they finished the work within the scheduled time. I will get CBJ for all my general contracting needs! Al and Vanessa"

"What more can I say about Home Genius Exteriors other than they are truly lifesavers! My home had a terrible leak in the back portion of our home. We didn't know where the leak was coming from so we assumed it was coming from the windows, so we searched via Google and found Home Genius Exteriors and saw the excellent ratings. We called and they immediately came out and started the process of our window replacement. However, upon further inspection by our project manager, Mike, he discovered it was actually our roof. After much research and time, we had the roof fixed prior to the window replacement. Mike and crew came to my home the day of the replacement on time and worked tirelessly to complete it. Because my windows were so old, they actually had to re-frame them and even made them look better than before! Home Genius Exteriors went over and beyond... their professionalism and constant contact with me made a world of difference. The final product is amazing and I am still in awe how beautiful it is! Thank you so much Mike and the Home Genius Exteriors crew!"

"Doug replaced a 30 year old deck support post and did an excellent job. He had to 'problem-solve' some prior construction issues which demonstrated his excellent carpentry skills. I will certainly use Doug in future projects around our home!"

"Carlos and his crew did outstanding work in installing a new ceiling in our living and dining rooms and in painting those rooms and our kitchen cabinets. We are absolutely delighted with the results! They were very punctual. Carlos explained the steps needed to complete the jobs. He and his crew took great care of our furnishings and left the rooms in spotless condition. His prices seemed more than fair. He and his crew were pleasant and friendly. It was a pleasure having them in our home! We will not hesitate to hire them again should the need arise. We highly recommend them! Bill and Pat Carpenter"

Carpentry questions, answered by experts

Installing an ornamental or decorative porch column takes around three to five hours. Structural columns take longer because your pro has to install a jack to hold up the roof while switching the column out. If there's any structural damage, it can add several days to the timeline to repair the damage.

The easiest way to tell if a wall is load bearing is to check if it’s an exterior wall or if it runs perpendicular to the joists above and below it (or parallel to beams). Exterior walls are almost always load-bearing, and walls that run under beams or parallel to them are also usually load-bearing. There are exceptions to these rules, and walls that don’t fit into these categories can still be load-bearing. If you’re unsure, hire a structural engineer to look at your home to assess whether or not the wall is structural.

No rules state how much of a load-bearing wall can be removed. Rather, you need to adequately support any area that is removed. Support should always be added to as much wall area is being removed. Failing to support the area properly will result in structural damage.

Yes, you will need a jack for a rim joist replacement. To prevent sagging and facilitate the removal of load-bearing wood, you’ll need to relieve the pressure from this joint before beginning work.

Due to hydraulics and other specialized equipment, a sill plate and rim joist replacement are not typically a DIY project. Hiring a professional structural engineer and experienced contractors is the best approach to replacing rotted sill plates and rim joists.

Framing with metal studs can be significantly faster than using wooden studs, provided you have some experience working with the material. While you can use virtually instant pneumatic nailers with wood, metal requires installing screws. However, because metal is lighter, straighter, usually comes cut-to-length, and doesn't require sorting for the best pieces, you can save significant time using metal instead of wood.
