"I was very impressed with the work that Red Oaks did for me. They removed a dead oak tree and cut down some huge hanging limbs near my house. They were very professional and friendly. I asked them about whether other trees on my property should be cut down, and they gave me an honest assessment of the health of the remain trees. I highly recommend them for their honesty, professionalism and value."

"I couldn't ask for better service! A Coreas Tree Services team member contacted me within minutes of my project submission on Angi to schedule a time to stop by. The owner was on time the next morning, quoted a very reasonable price, and scheduled his crew to come out later the same day. True professionals from beginning to the end. We definitely recommend Coreas Tree Services to anyone that needs a tree removed or cut back."

"I contracted White Oak Tree Experts to remove some trees, grind stomps, and perform light pruning at my single family home. Right from the start, from the free estimate where Fernando Reyes walked my property line with me while listening to my concerns and goals while offering helpful suggestions, to the day he brought his crew and equipment, I knew I was in good hands. I highly recommend Fernando and White Oak Tree Experts since they are professional, hard working, very efficient, affordable, and committed to their customers needs. They exceeded my expectations!"

"This was a high-risk tree removal due to how close the tree was to our home, and this team handled it with impressive professionalism. The initial consultation was thorough, and the estimator clearly understood the technical challenges involved. No overselling, just straightforward guidance. Scheduling was efficient, and communication from the office was consistent. The removal crew arrived on time and worked methodically. Their execution was precise. There was no damage, no issues, and no unnecessary disruption. The stump grinding was also done properly, not rushed. What stands out is the balance of quality and cost. The pricing was more than fair given the complexity of the job. It’s clear this company knows what they’re doing at every level from front office to field execution. Strong recommendation for anyone in Ellicott City needing reliable tree work."

"They are really nice and I ended up feeling taken. Ben Allen came out to do an estimate on my neighbor's yard and my neighbor asked if I wanted to talk with him as well as we had just moved into a home where nothing had been done in quite a while. Ben gave an estimate of $1850 to clear out the bushes in front of my house trim back or prune all the trees, remove the ivy from the trees and the house, and take out the overgrowth around my garage. I never got it in writing and had to call back to find out what was going on. I kind of figured when I spoke to the mom in the office and told her the price that there was a problem - it just felt weird, and she suggested that he come out. I had gotten the day wrong that they were coming so I said, I would get it in writing when he came out to do the work. The day that they came out to do the work the price magically jumped from $1850 to the price he quoted my neighbor of $3200. In retrospect, I should have declined. First off Ben said that the reason was the oaks that I had, needed to be really pruned so I said, then just get the obvious stuff, and then he said that the reason for the increase was that he hadn't included the cost of removing the overgrowth next to the garage. At that point I was pretty much caught in trying to figure out what was so and feeling like an absolute idiot for not having gotten it in writing, and with a house that badly needed the work, so we made the decision to get it over with. The trees that should have been really pruned still have dead wood in them, and there is still ivy everywhere on the trees. On the plus side, the guys were really really nice, asked about removing trees as they went along, and cleaned up everything. If I hadn't been so upset by the whole experiece I would have been out there asking about limbs that weren't done, so some of it is my fault for not being on top of things in the end and some of it is that they should have done what they overcharged or underestimated from the beginning. I asked my husband to find out about the trees but being direct isn't his forte. I honestly don't know if I would use them again. I think overall they do good work. The wise thing to do is to write it down yourself if he isn't going to do it. The interesting thing is that on the back of his card is a place for estimates so I get the impression that this has happened before."

Arborists questions, answered by experts

Light-bark trees are most notorious for producing lots of sap when wounded. These varieties include maples, birches, poplars, dogwoods, magnolias, and elms, and they will bleed more when the trees are dormant. That’s why it’s a good idea to prune them in the summer months rather than waiting until winter.

Tree trimming can count as landscaping, depending on how a landscaping business describes its services. Professional tree trimmers are more specialized than landscapers and offer trimming services separately from general landscaping.

When general landscaping companies offer tree trimming, look up the details. They usually mean shaping or seasonal trimming of ornamental trees, which is different from trimming larger trees for health or safety reasons. When possible, look for a licensed expert that specializes in trees and tree health.

Generally, homeowners do not need permission to cut down a tree on their own private property, but there are several exceptions where a permit may be required. You might need a permit if the tree is particularly large, old, or a protected species, such as a heritage tree. Trees located near public property or power lines can also be subject to special rules. Additionally, many local governments and homeowners associations (HOAs) have regulations controlling which trees can be removed to manage an area's appearance or prevent the spread of invasive species. To avoid hefty fines, it is crucial to check with your local government and HOA to determine if a permit is needed before you begin.

Whether you grind or dig up and remove your tree stump depends on your landscaping goals. Using a stump grinder leaves the root system in place for it to decompose over time, whereas digging up the tree stump removes the roots and the stump. Overall, stump grinding is a far simpler process since you won’t need to deal with the roots. Stump removal will make your yard look like a demolition site, but you’ll have an easier time replanting in the same place as your former tree.

State and local laws vary, but in most cases, you are allowed to trim any branches from your neighbor's tree that cross your property line. However, it's important to ensure you do not damage the overall health of the tree in the process. Removing branches incorrectly can jeopardize the health of the tree and could lead to you being on the hook to replace it.
