"James did an amazing job on our newly remodeled kitchen floors. He worked closely with our Carpenter and electrician to complete our new heated floor installation which was quite challenging given the fact that our old house has no straight floors or walls!! He completely removed all of the layers of old flooring, and the subfloor, installed new subfloor, leveled, and installed the new heated floor and tile. We love how much attention he pays to the details to ensure we are happy with the job. Also we love that he shows up on time and in a good mood. We've had other contractors in the past show up late, with bad attitudes, and constantly complaining -- the type of people you wouldn't trust alone in your house. We love using Star Choice because we can trust them!! No better contractor to hire!"

"While it may have taken them longer than they would have liked they did not rush or cut corners. I get positive complements from everyone that looks at the house. "We were so pleased with the work done! The original project involved mostly painting but as they worked, there were more issues presented with the walls and ceilings in our house. JL Was very communicative with the issues that needed to be fixed, clearing all of it with us and keeping us aware of any additional costs incurred (very little additional was added from the original estimate, and only for work requested after we had received the estimate). Textured walls can increase the value of your home if the style is modern and seen as a desirable feature and not something a prospective buyer would need to remedy. A good example of this is popcorn texture versus Venetian plaster. The plaster wall would add value to your home, whereas the popcorn texture may be something a new buyer would want to remove.

No, you do not have to worry about new popcorn ceilings having asbestos. All residential building materials used since the mid-1980s stopped including asbestos, so new popcorn ceilings have no risk of asbestos. You can still create a textured drywall ceiling with a popcorn texture if you like, but new techniques have no risk of adding asbestos. 

If your popcorn ceiling is asbestos-free and you are ready for a new look, painting is an option. As long as there is no flaking or other wear, a new coat of paint might be just the thing to refresh the old ceiling. The best way to paint a popcorn ceiling is to use either a paint sprayer or a thick roller to cover the popcorn texture fully. (Do not forget to dust it off beforehand!)

“Note that if you eventually want to remove the popcorn ceiling, a painted ceiling is a labor-intensive job to remove and will cost more,” says Bob Tschudi. “Once painted, the process of removing the popcorn ceiling requires physical scraping as opposed to a spray-and-scrape approach. It’s very labor-intensive, and thus more costly.”

Using a paint sprayer is the most effective method for painting popcorn ceilings, and it's why professionals choose spraying versus rolling paint. The sprayer simplifies the challenges of painting the texture. However, we don’t recommend that DIYers try to use a sprayer indoors as it could make a significant mess. Using a paint roller on a ladder is the easiest option that results in much less mess.

Although texturing walls may not seem like a lengthy project, you’ll need to set aside between one and five days to complete it properly. The exact amount will depend on the scope of your project—one room will take less than a whole-house project. That will give you enough time for tasks that are time-consuming in and of themselves, like taping wall edges, priming the walls and letting them dry fully, and actually applying the texture and top or base paint coats.
