"Pleasant father and son team, with son taking the lead. They quoted a price to come out and assess, but did not charge for doing so, although we had call them the day of the appointment to remind them of the appointment. They made sure to mention in the initial phone call that they buy and sell houses as well. They came out and once we mentioned that we were soon selling our house, they were more concerned with telling us what repairs needed to be done in the entire house, than with focusing on the repair they were requested to assess. The estimate was for $1500-$8000, depending on if we just wanted the repair of the shower leak or the entire bathroom redone. There was an access panel, which they saw and pointed out at the visit, that could have been an option to use for the repair, but instead their estimate was for the route of repairing through the tiling in the bathroom. We went with a different plumber and got the shower repaired done for under $100."

"I used 858 Flooring & Remodeling to replace 1,000 sq/ft of basement flooring. I had 3 different types of flooring (tile, laminate, and carpet) and there was a lot of demo work to be done (including 400+ sq/ft of well stuck 8x8 tile). The estimate process with Grant was great. He broke the estimate down with a lot of options for services. This helped us decide what we were going to do on or own vs pay to have him do for us. He also had great suggestions on what type of flooring material we could use that would be most economical. I really appreciated his forthright estimating process. We went with 858 Flooring & Remodeling for two reasons, the price was reasonable, and we wanted a service provider that specialized in flooring. Between scheduling the service and the day Grant started, he was always available for questions and very clear on his instructions on the amount of materials I should purchase ahead of time. On the day the service was scheduled to begin, Grant arrived at the time he told me to expect him and his colleague George came soon after. Grant and George were at my place for 6 days and they demoed 1,000 sq/ft of flooring, leveled the concrete, fixed some larger issues with the concrete, put down new vinyl plank and floorboard and shoe molding. They were both a pleasure to work with, let us know when they were about to do something that would limit our access to areas of our house, and were always willing to talk through potential issues. When extra services were needed due to the condition of our concrete floor, Grant always offered different options and was upfront about what the additional cost would be. Most importantly, the quality of their work was first-rate. From protecting my furniture from dust due to the tile demo, to prepping the floor, to laying the vinyl plank and floorboards, everything was done very very well. The floorboards and shoe molding especially are perfectly aligned and finished off everywhere you look. I had a great experience working with 858 Flooring & Remodeling and would highly recommend them."

"I had tiles that had come loose due to improper installation (by someone else). William remove that tile and hardy board to clean up the bad installation. He put down a new membrane and tile. He even found a new tile that matched the old ones. Great job!"

"I bought a home built before 1978 and found that there was some asbestos floor tile in the basement. I reached out to D&H Demolition and they immediately came out to take a look at the project and provided a free estimate. They were very helpful and answered all my questions which made me feel a lot safer about the situation. I hired them and they took care of the work the very next day! Overall I was very pleased with their price and quality of work. Highly recommend!"

Ceramic Tile questions, answered by experts

Yes, tiling a bathroom is a great way to boost your home's value, especially if you are replacing old or dated flooring. Adding a new tile floor can deliver a return on investment (ROI) of around 56.4%, with some projects offering up to 100% ROI. Buyers appreciate new tile because it provides a modern look and is known for being durable, water-resistant, low-maintenance, and easy to clean. For the best results and highest return, consider hiring a professional, as tiling mistakes can be very noticeable and detract from the value.

If you hire a professional to lay tile, you can expect to pay $3 to $15 per square foot for labor. For a 100-square-foot tiling project, that would equal $30 to $150 in labor. These costs may increase if you need extra services (such as tile removal, wall repair, or waterproofing). For example, tile removal costs an additional $2 to $7 per square foot.

The difference between floor and wall tiles is that floor tiles generally have higher strength and porosity ratings than wall tiles. Wall tiles are typically weaker and more likely to crack or become damaged under sustained pressure like high foot traffic.

For this reason, avoid using wall tiles on floors and vice versa.

The average cost for tile installation is about $2,000, with a typical price range between $500 and $6,500. On a per-square-foot basis, you can expect to pay between $5 and $45 for installation.

Several factors influence the total cost, including:

  • Installation Site: Costs vary for different areas. Common project costs are: kitchen floor ($870–$6,100), countertop or backsplash ($500–$3,000), bathroom floor ($300–$2,400), or shower wall ($225–$2,000).

  • Tile Type and Quality: The material significantly impacts price. For example, standard ceramic or travertine tile can cost about $1 per square foot, while luxury options like marble can be as much as $350 per square foot for the material alone.

  • Project Size and Complexity: The total square footage, the complexity of the pattern, and the shape of the tile (e.g., square, rectangle, hexagon, mosaic) will affect labor and material costs.

  • Site Preparation: The amount of prep work needed, such as removing old tile or installing a new subfloor or backer board, can add to the final price.

  • Tile Characteristics: The tile's durability rating and porosity can also influence the price.

  • Location: Labor rates vary by geographic location.

There are no unbreakable rules of design, but experts recommend against using large tiles in areas with poor subflooring where they’re more prone to cracking, in areas where the floor isn’t entirely level, over raised areas or dips, and in bathrooms where budget is the primary concern. The size of your bathroom shouldn’t be a reason not to use large tiles; in fact, larger tiles, also known as slab tiles, can be a modern and sleek choice for bathroom floors and walls.
