"Prolandscapeâ s did some work for us in our back yard which involved building a retaining wall, laying down a patio, and leveling the area. It was a challenging job, but David and his crew pulled it off with their sheer commitment and and ingenuity. Highly recommend them!"

"Very well. The staff was on time, cleaned the flower beds, moved dirt to various beds, mulched, put down landscape ties, and more. They were very professional and knowledgeable of what needed to be done. I plan to hire G&G Landscaping again for other landscaping needs. Job well done! Many thanks to G&G for making my flower beds beautiful again!"

"Donta and his Ridley's Landscaping crew did an amazing job. We had a sewer line problem and had to have our yard dug up. The plumbing company left a mess, damaging our tree, crushing bushes, and leaving big pile of dirt in the yard. We called Ridley's. They came out promptly for an estimate, and once we said yes, they came out promptly and did an amazing job. They did so well that our neighbor was watching them work and hired them on the spot to do some grading in his yard. They were highly professional, worked hard, and simply got the job done as it should be done. We talked to another company that seemed cheaper, but they didn't give me the confidence that Donta gave me, and now that the job is done, I can say that confidence was well placed."

Excavating questions, answered by experts

Sewer laterals are the most common excavating need for homeowners in Baltimore, as original clay or cast-iron pipes degrade over time. You will also see high demand for exterior basement waterproofing and foundation repairs due to the dense clay soil and high rainfall across MD. Additionally, hillside properties require retaining wall repairs, and older homes need trenching to replace original lead water service lines.

Helpful?

Chronic yard sinkholes, collapsed sewer lines, and horizontal foundation cracks indicate a clear need for excavating. In contrast, hairline vertical foundation cracks or isolated slow drains are simple interior fixes. If water enters through the base of your basement walls, you must schedule exterior excavating to install proper drainage. However, standing water near a downspout in MD requires regrading the immediate area.

Helpful?

Watch for quotes that lack separate line items for street permits and soil disposal. A reputable contractor in Baltimore will proactively mention utility marking and plan for required municipal inspections before backfilling. Avoid professionals who promise unusually rapid timelines, as proper excavating in MD clay soil requires careful dewatering and shoring. Finally, ensure the quote addresses shared foundation walls if you live in a rowhouse.

Helpful?

A major mistake is starting an excavating project without contacting the state utility marking service beforehand. Homeowners in Baltimore also fail to secure the proper street opening and plumbing permits. Another common error involves digging near shared rowhouse foundation walls without proper shoring, causing structural damage. Finally, digging during heavy rain seasons in MD causes dangerous trench collapses in saturated clay soil.

Helpful?

Schedule excavating if you notice sinkholes in your yard, sewer backups during heavy rain, or stair-step cracks in your brick exterior. Older rowhouses in Baltimore have aging cast-iron sewer lines that require replacement after several decades. Additionally, the clay-heavy soil in MD expands and contracts, causing significant ground movement that damages underground pipes and foundations over time.
