"We needed someone to fix our hallway lights and other minor things. We called PM Electric on a Wednesday at 4pm, hoping to set up an appointment for the next day. Po came within 40 minutes that day. Surveyed the situation, left to get all the materials and ended up fixing lights, doorbell, changing smoke detectors and even checking our electrical panel by 6pm with his assistant. It was wonderful. We felt the price was fair especially when he did all the service that day on short notice. He is very pleasant and offered his advice and recommendations on things that we asked him about. We plan on having him come back to replace the electric baseboard cover. He will be our "go to" electrician on the Cape."

Electrical questions, answered by experts

The most common gauge for indoor outlets around your home is 12- and 14-gauge wires. But if you’re working with larger appliances like ovens, washing machines, or dryers (all of which require more amplitude), you might find 10-, eight-, or six-gauge wires to help support those hefty appliances.

A standard three-prong electrical outlet typically lasts for about 15 years with normal use and should be replaced accordingly. GFCI outlets may have a longer lifespan of 15 to 25 years. While some outlets can last longer if used infrequently, they can also fail prematurely. Reasons for early failure include poor wiring, an overloaded circuit, improper grounding or installation, or loose plugs. Signs that an outlet is failing include flickering lights, overheating, a discolored or melted faceplate, plugs that fall out easily, or frequently tripping circuit breakers. It is essential to address faulty outlets promptly to avoid safety hazards, especially in homes older than 15 years.

To fix a tripped light switch, locate your home's electrical panel and identify the tripped circuit breaker. It will be in the "off" or neutral position. Flip the breaker entirely to the "off" position, then switch it back to the "on" position. If the breaker trips again immediately, there may be a short circuit or overload in the system, requiring further investigation. If the switch still doesn't work after resetting the breaker, check for loose wires or faulty components in the switch itself. It is always best to consult a licensed electrician for persistent issues and when in doubt.

Upgrading your amp service could possibly be a solution to tripped breakers. Circuit breakers in an electrical panel trip as a safety measure when something goes wrong with the current, and that’s often caused by plugged-in devices trying to draw too much current. Replacing the electrical panel with a new model and new breakers designed for higher amps can fix this problem.

A two-way switch is also called a single-pole or single-throw switch. These switches only have an on-and-off function and only control a single light or series of lights wired together. A three-way switch has no “on” or "off” position and works with a second switch in the circuit to control a single light or light series from two locations.
