"The first Nor'easter of 2018 is brewing outside with potential for power outages because of 60 to 70 mile an hour winds. Yet, I'm not worried because I have this beautiful, powerful Kohler 20RESD generator sitting outside. Paul and his very professional crew installed the generator in June of last year, and it has already saved my cellar from flooding four times. First time was while I was on a trip to Europe for two weeks last summer. I have a sump pump that is running every 30 minutes, even on the driest days of August. What this generator is giving me is a huge piece of mind. Before installing the generator, we always worried if we went away, even just for a weekend. Now I almost look forward to coming home and checking if the generator kicked in while we were away. Paul and his crew - Kenney, Bill, and Adam - were very professional, and other than having this 'beautiful' generator sitting outside, there are no signs of them even being here. They were impeccable in cleaning up the work area, both outside and in the cellar. Paul was very patient with us, even with several design/location changes. He handled everything from constructing the generator pad, to final inspection, and first startup of the generator. Paul Foley Electric is truly a 'turnkey' operation, as Paul also handled the installation, and inspection of an in-ground propane tank. All of the other contractors that I had contacted did not offer this, leaving me to find someone to install the tank. I highly recommend Paul Foley Electric Co., Inc."

Customers say: True professional

"I just had an electrical job done by Sean at my house in Mashpee and I honestly cannot say enough good things about him and his company. He gave me a reasonable quote for what I needed done and then communicated with me by email, phone and text to make sure I understood the job and knew what would be happening next. He had to coordinate the job with Eversource which was not easy at all, but he kept at them. He apologized to me several times for how Eversource kept rescheduling when it wasn’t his fault at all. When the day came to have it done, Sean and his crew were on time, got right to work and were very professional. And they always took their shoes off before coming in the house! The job was inspected by the town, which he coordinated, and it was done right and passed. I definitely recommend them and I will be using them again myself!"

"Responded immediately to the side effects of a water break in the house. Immediately restored electrical services to dry areas, came back a few days later to restore more services. Gave detailed proposal before work was initiated, had enough supplies on truck to immediately replace most of affected parts. and advised on purchase of replacement fixtures. The technician was cheerful and understood my goals in restoring service."

Electrical questions, answered by experts

It’s possible to distinguish a positive black wire from a negative black wire if you know what type of circuit the wires are in. If it’s an alternating current (AC), then black wires are positive. If it’s a direct current (DC), then black wires are negative.

Sometimes, a circuit has two black wires. In that case, the positive black wire will be solid black while the negative black wire will have a white stripe on it. If you’re still unsure, you can use a multimeter to check.

Yes, pool pumps use a significant amount of electricity, making them one of the biggest energy consumers in a home. A pool pump can use up to three times as much electricity as a refrigerator. Typically, a residential pool pump consumes about 1 kilowatt-hour (kWh) for every hour it runs. Because pumps often need to run for about eight hours a day to properly filter the water, this can add up to an annual consumption of 3,000 to 5,000 kWh, which can cost between $480 and $800 per year based on average electricity rates.

The amount of electricity your pump uses depends on its size, energy efficiency, and daily run time. To lower your energy consumption, you can choose an energy-efficient or variable-speed pump, ensure it is correctly sized for your pool, and run it only for the minimum time required to keep the water clean.

There are several reasons why an electrical outlet would suddenly stop working, including:

  • Broken parts in the outlet

  • Outlet burnout

  • Circuit breaker tripped

  • Damaged circuit breaker

  • GFCI outlet tripped

  • Damaged or loose wires

  • Failed connectors

  • Appliance failure

You don’t need an electrician to change an outlet—but that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t hire one. Working with electricity can be dangerous, not only for you but also for your home and the members of your household. There’s the risk of electrocution, poor wiring burnout, and electrical fire. When you hire a licensed electrician, you’ll have peace of mind knowing that your electrical outlets are installed correctly and up to code.

Upgrading a two-prong outlet to a three-prong outlet typically costs between $20 and $50 per outlet if the electrical box is already grounded. However, the cost can increase significantly if the system is not grounded, as this may require grounding the box or upgrading your electrical panel. Electricians generally charge between $50 and $100 per hour for labor, and the total cost for a more complex installation could range from $130 to $300.
