"I recently had my shingle roof replaced and I?m very happy with the results. The team was professional, punctual, and completed the job efficiently. The quality of the work is excellent, and the new roof looks great. They kept the work area clean and communicated well throughout the process. "They arrived on time,  were professional and answered a lot of question.  It took about three hours and two people came to do this.  They left the area mostly clean.  They did leave some stickers on the windows that I had to pull off.  I would tell friends and family that they should research the price on windows to make sure they are not over paying."

"The job was great from start to finish. Brian came out to survey the work and got me a quote promptly. Within two weeks, he and his crew were installing my new front porch. It was done in one day and looks fantastic. I would highly recommend Brian and his crew for any work like this."

"Everything went great, there were a couple changes that had to be made as the job progressed, we found out the old toilet had been leaking pretty badly, and there was a bunch of rotting floor boards.  Other than that they completed the job within our time frame, cleaned the house up at the end of each day very well, and really treated our home like it was theirs.  Everything was sealed up with plastic barriers so we wouldn't get dust throughout the house, I was very pleased about that.  We plan to have them back in the next year or two for the kitchen.

"The SHC crew was very professional and were a pleasure to work with from quote to finishing touches. We needed a small deck built off the back of our house and they were able to make some design suggestions that saved us money and improved the overall quality of the deck. Definitely would reccomend to others."

Unfinished Carpentry questions, answered by experts

Costs depend on furniture type, size, complexity, and whether additional modifications are needed.

Most Cape Cod houses are two stories tall at the peak, although they’re considered one-and-a-half stories tall because the steep roof pitch cuts off a portion of the living space on the second story. Unless you raise the roof on your Cape Cod house to add a dormer, the interior rooms upstairs will lose some usable living space to the sloped ceilings.

Yes, you can find ceiling joists using simple tools if a stud finder isn't available.

Using a hammer requires patience and a keen ear. Gently tap the ceiling in a grid pattern, listening for sound changes. A hollow sound indicates space between joists, while a solid, dull thud suggests a joist. Mark the location with a pencil and confirm by tapping from different angles.

Alternatively, you can use a nail, but this method will leave small holes. You'll feel increased resistance when the nail hits a joist. Mark the spot and repeat the process every 16 or 24 inches to map the joist locations. This method is considered less reliable than using a stud finder.

Framing with metal studs can be significantly faster than using wooden studs, provided you have some experience working with the material. While you can use virtually instant pneumatic nailers with wood, metal requires installing screws. However, because metal is lighter, straighter, usually comes cut-to-length, and doesn't require sorting for the best pieces, you can save significant time using metal instead of wood.

The easiest way to tell if a wall is load bearing is to check if it’s an exterior wall or if it runs perpendicular to the joists above and below it (or parallel to beams). Exterior walls are almost always load-bearing, and walls that run under beams or parallel to them are also usually load-bearing. There are exceptions to these rules, and walls that don’t fit into these categories can still be load-bearing. If you’re unsure, hire a structural engineer to look at your home to assess whether or not the wall is structural.
