"Colin was just terrific--responsive, professional, cordial and efficient! His workmanship was top-notch, and the projects for which we hired him, including drywall and plaster repair and installation in several locations around our house, were completed on time and on budget. We'd give Colin and McCarthy Plastering more than five stars were that possible and hire him again without hesitation."

So nice working with someone like Bob who you feel like you can trust and you can. He wasn’t worried about the money. It was more worried about making sure I was getting the best job done. "This is the 3rd time we worked with Vanildo over many years. Not only it’s always pleasant working with him and his team, but it’s also always a great value with Vanildo, too. We actually have somewhat of a bigger project for him. He is responsible for the painting and wall/ceiling repair in a bigger kitchen project. Basically, others come to tear down walls and poke wholes in my popcorn ceilings and he has to repair and patch all that and paint over 3 ceilings, 3 walls in the living/dining area (color matching the existing walls) and paint a whole kitchen. The job took two days to repair and prep and then paint. They tried their best to cover up all my furniture and belongings, and the floor to prevent paint and plaster falling on them. Even if there were little bits sprayed or splashed outside, as long as you see them, he’s always willing to clean up humbly. He told us he can’t see everything, so if we see something just let him know, he’ll correct it. We love his humble attitude, and that’s partly what makes him so easy to work with. Even after 2 days, when we saw something not working the way we expected, I took a picture, sent it to him, he responded right away and scheduled ASAP to come and fix the problem. We highly recommend Vanildo’s service, we think it’s quality work at great value."

"John is a very nice guy to work with. He was brought in by the gentleman who did the go-over of our old, cracking ceilings so I didn't actually hire him but I would again in a minute! He got here early and by mid-afternoon had plastered two bedroom ceilings. They are beautiful! Perfectly smooth and level. I did the painting and couldn't find any problem spots at all. He didn't make a mess and was very careful to clean-up afterwards. I will definitely hire him in the future to do any plastering of walls and ceilings. The finish is so much nicer than just tape and joint compound.

Plaster Repair questions, answered by experts

Plastering and skimming are two different techniques for finishing walls. Plastering involves applying a thick layer of a plaster mixture—typically containing gypsum, lime, cement, sand, and water—to create a new surface. This process often requires multiple coats and is used for repairing significant damage or creating decorative textures. Skimming, on the other hand, is a technique that involves applying a thin layer of drywall compound or joint compound over an existing surface to smooth it out, covering minor imperfections, small cracks, or uneven textures for a polished look. Plastering is generally more costly and labor-intensive than skimming. Although some people use the terms interchangeably, they refer to different processes and materials.

Yes, you can install drywall over plaster, but there are important factors to consider. While it can create a smooth, flat surface, it is often not the best approach. Installing drywall over plaster will increase the wall's thickness, which can cause issues with existing window and door frames that may no longer fit. You might also need to adjust power outlets to keep them accessible. A better, though more expensive, option is to remove the old plaster and lath entirely before installing new drywall. Drywalling directly over plaster seals in the old material, and if any problems arise later, you will need to remove both layers down to the structural beams for repairs. Given the potential complications, this job is best handled by professionals.

Plaster can be a difficult DIY to master, especially if you plan to plaster an entire room, rather than patch a small area. Before you begin a plaster DIY project, you need to know which tools and type of plaster to use. It's also important to know how to prepare the surface and apply the plaster for a smooth finish. If that all sounds like a lot of work, you may prefer hiring a local plaster repair contractor to do the job.

Plastering lasts for around 15 to 20 years without needing repairs or maintenance in most cases, and with proper upkeep, plastering can last a lifetime—sometimes more than 100 years. Plaster repair costs between $1 and $3 per square foot, and you may need these services once every 15 to 20 years or so unless you have a harsh climate where humidity changes are a constant issue. You can also opt to skim-coat plaster for between $0.90 and $1.30 per square foot, which may serve you better in the long run.

Plaster walls typically last between 30 and 70 years, but depending on the quality of the materials and the moisture levels in the building, they can last for over 100 years. With expert application and consistent maintenance, plaster can even last for centuries. To extend its lifespan, it is important to have the plaster professionally installed, address any water damage promptly, and repair small cracks as they appear. Regular inspections by a professional can help identify and address concerning cracks before they become significant issues.
