Harris and Company Landscaping is a full-service, fully-insured landscape design/build company specializing in the design and installation of high quality patios, walkways, planting, landscape lighting and outdoor kitchens. We have been servicing eastern and central Massachusetts for over 13 years. We employ over 15 highly skilled workers- many graduates of agricultural colleges or high schools. Our workers complete continuing education courses during the winter off-season. We proudly offer LIFETIME WARRANTIES on labor performed on all patio and walkway work, and most of our materials are also guaranteed for life by our suppliers.

"We received an initial quote from Harris & Co. based on a recommendation from a coworker to replace a backyard deck with a stone patio. I received three quotes from various contractors. Harris's quote was the most expensive but I went with Joshua Harris's company anyway for the following reasons: * Joshua had a complete treatment that included landscaping (which ultimately I did not do), pavers, lowering of the ground, demolition, fire pit, and seating wall. * They were responsive, using text and email and replying promptly. * Joshua Harris had a better vision for the project than I did! He envisioned a wall, lighting, making the patio extremely large (due to the limited space in the backyard, he thought that leaving a bit of grass would be pretty pointless). Ultimately, it was the completeness of the vision that drew me to use his service. Since he does landscaping, lighting, and tons of stuff, Joshua will give you a pretty complete treatment. This costs you. I think that you get what you pay for, but it's something to keep in mind. If you have a budget, keep your discipline and see what aspects that you can go without! That all said, we went all out for this project and added a long wall, accent pavers, a large fire pit, and lighting. This was an extremely expensive project for us, but it's been worth it as the end result is rather beautiful and makes the space much more usable. Before, we wouldn't even leave out the back door because the deck was so small and the yard was so dreary, but the large 28' stone patio makes the space inviting and easy to walk across, even when we're not entertaining. As for the work, I was impressed by the amount of communication that was provided. They contacted me almost every day to let me know if they were going to arrive to work and informed me if circumstances (usually rain, sometimes illness) affected the schedule. Joshua was overall very professional. There were occasionally circumstances though that affected what could be done at any point - for example a certain model of lamp I requested wasn't available, so I had to get a different one; in another case one of the bulbs burned out and I had to reach out to get it replaced. The final thing is that Joshua follows through. The mulch for the back was delayed due to an inventory issue and I hadn't heard from him after the work for a number of weeks, but then he called me when the items came back in and scheduled the follow-up. The point is: if you need something from him, don't be afraid to reach out. The work was quite costly but I think that you get what you pay for and when you go with Harris & Co., you get a lot."

"Very quick and professional response to initial inquiries and all follow up communication during the season. Work always done on schedule. Not only thorough in their work but very considerate replacing lawn furniture. First landscape contractor I’ve worked with who went a whole season without breaking something. Their ‘’Quickbook’ invoice system is very convenient and good for my record keeping."

All employees are fully insured, all associates are fully insured, with workers comp and liability insurance. Alternative phone (508) 879-6779. Award winning.

"Great job! Chris, Pat and Mike could not have been more accommodating and pleasant to work with. Chris initially discussed the work with me and made some suggestions to create the privacy screen I was looking for. He recommended bringing in some loam to build up the ground height so the trees would sit taller. These were 8’ trees with massive root balls. There is very limited access to my yard and, to add to the challenge of getting the trees in place, they needed to navigate through my many existing plantings. They took great care to protect everything, and not a single plant was disturbed. The trees are beautiful, lush and healthy plants, which Chris made it a point to hand pick at the nursery. They mulched the area, did an initial watering and even set up my soaker hose. This was not easy work and we had some oppressive heat, but the guys took it in stride and worked hard for a beautiful finished product."

James Sheehan Landscaping was established in 1978 as a part time business with just James providing services and one truck. Today, we are a full time business with 11 employees and an array of top of the line of equipment for all aspects of maintenance, landscape construction including hardscape and snow removal and ice control. Occasionally, we do use sub-contractors....i.e. large tree work, asphalt paving and irrigation services. We accept all major credit cards and paypal. Please feel free to look us up on Facebook and our website James Sheehan Landscaping.

"James Sheehan Review Very impressive company! Asked about removing front of house overgrown ugly shrubbery and replacing with new plans and bushes. Professional crew showed up and transformed front of house to beautiful! Then proceeded to add a bunch of extra work including cutting down tree limbs that were encroaching house and roof, went to back yard and cleaned up entire backyard including trimming back over grown bushes. Came back and remulched beds. Also came back and removed leaves- even under areas that hadn’t been cleared in years. Overall tremendous effort that were well beyond expectations! Pricing well below what our neighbors pay from other contractors and results are not nearly so thorough. Hire James Sheehan to take care of your home yard care and other services and you will experience the best!!"

Mulch and Topsoil questions, answered by experts

Mid to late spring is the best time of year to mulch. If you do it too early in the spring, the mulch could slow down the warming process of the soil and affect how well plants grow. By mid to late spring the temperatures are usually steadying, making it an ideal time to spread mulch.

Costs depend on waste volume, service frequency, and additional options like bulk pickups.

Most experts recommend a quarter-inch layer of compost for best results, and you will need about .77 cubic yards of material per 1,000 square feet. To measure how much compost to use, take the square footage of your yard and multiply it by .77, then divide that number by 1,000.

If you are xeriscaping a lawn from scratch, your best bet for preparing the lawn is to work with a xeriscaping specialist in your area. The most common first step to making the transformation, however, will be to remove the turfgrass from your lawn. The subsequent steps will often include amending the soil to support new plants and installing low-drip or drip irrigation systems.

Yes, rotting leaves can be good for your soil. The decaying leaves release nutrients into the soil that can boost the health of your plants, and the organic matter also helps improve airflow and water drainage.
