"Rob not only showed up in a timely fashion, but repaired the leaks quickly and left the house the way he found it, clean. He suggested installing a water treatment system to prevent future leaks and was able to install the system the next day. His communication was excellent and he honored his quote !! Thank you Rob !"

"We got three comparable quotes, so even thought the price tag was high (yikes!), they seemed fair. Atlas Glen-Mor was responsive, thorough and professional. The two guys who installed the boiler (I think they were both named John) were great -- they worked hard all day (about 11 hours), explained everything very carefully, and were very professional. We needed a follow-up visit to skim the water in the boiler, and the service was prompt and effective. My only minor gripe is I've sometimes had to wait on hold for 10+ minutes when I've called, but I eventually get through. Maybe it's extra busy in winter time."

Water Softeners FAQs, answered by experts

Hard water is not considered unhealthy and is safe to drink, cook with, and bathe in. It doesn't pose a risk to your physical health and can even help you get enough essential minerals like calcium in your diet. However, it can negatively affect skin and hair. Using hard water for washing can contribute to dry skin, an itchy scalp, and may worsen conditions like eczema by altering the pH balance. Additionally, some people do not like the taste of hard water.

No, a water descaler won't descale pipes. The charged water running through the pipes may very slowly dissolve mineral deposits and hold them inside the water, but it's a very gradual process. If your pipes do need descaling, it's much better to get a local plumber to descale your pipes.

You can decide whether you need a water softener or water filter based on how your bathing or laundry experience is. If you notice issues like limescale buildup, dry skin, or stains on dishes—all telltale signs of hard water—you'd likely benefit from a water softener. However, if your main concern is over chemicals or bacteria in your tap water filter, and not just comfort, a filter is a better option.

A good hardness level for drinking water can vary based on personal preferences, but an ideal level is 3.5 to 7 GPG. This means your water isn’t soft or hard. However, some people prefer the “fresh” taste from the minerals in hard water, while others like the smoother, “slippery” texture of soft water.

A tankless water heater should be at least 10 feet away from a water softener, although the pros you hire for water softener installation can help you determine the correct distance. These two units need to have some distance between them to prevent hot water from the tankless water heater from flowing backward into the water softener when it runs a regeneration cycle.
