He was able to reduce the high radon level to an acceptable level. He even monitored the mitigation system in our house while he was on vacation out of state and sent us reports. I was upfront about an interior drain being installed. When the technician arrived, he said he'd be happy to install the system, but that it would be worthless because of the interior drainage system. I then received a $200 invoice for the site visit. Frustrating scenario to have a sales rep schedule the appointment, knowing full-well that I had an interior drain, and then the technician tell me there's no point to install a mitigation system, but then charge me for the inconvenience of it all."

Ideally, no one will live in a house with elevated radon levels, as prolonged exposure increases the risk of serious health issues like lung cancer. However, homes with radon can be made safe through mitigation systems, such as active soil depressurization. Testing for radon regularly and addressing high levels helps ensure a safe living environment.

Avoid opening windows and keep doors closed during testing to obtain accurate readings.

A DIY kit can lessen the sting that comes with paying for a professional assessment, but these comprehensive tests are true lifesavers. Inspectors are more likely to catch all of the pollutants and hazards in your air. Plus, you’ll still need a professional to verify and act on your DIY test results. 

Some kits don’t include tests for certain air pollutants or only detect their presence, but not their levels (i.e., mold spores). If you’re willing to shell out money for a DIY kit, it’s usually better to stretch your budget slightly higher for a more detailed assessment.

You can buy DIY radon test kits from a home improvement store and conduct radon testing, but these tests are often inaccurate. No matter the result, you should supplement DIY testing with professional radon detection and analysis. DIYers only have access to passive radon tests, which aren’t as reliable as active tests that professionals use. Plus, it’s very easy for DIYers to make mistakes during testing, leading to inaccurate results.
