To child- or pet-proof your deck railing, look for railing systems with narrow spacing—under 4 inches—between balusters or panels. It is best to power wash your deck and sand it, as cleaning removes grime, mildew, and dirt, while sanding refreshes the wood and allows the stain to penetrate. How long deck boards last largely depends on the type of wood and if it's treated or not. Untreated boards last anywhere from ten to 30 years, assuming proper care and maintenance. Treated boards can last up to 50 years. Composite boards also tend to last longer than pure wood boards.

The main cause of a rotting porch post is prolonged exposure to moisture. So, the best way to prevent rot is to eliminate and guard against moisture.

  • Cover wooden posts with protective sleeves or wraps, often made of vinyl.

  • Install metal post anchors for extra support.

We recommend hanging a porch swing at least 2.5 to 3 feet from the wall and about 17 inches above the ground to avoid damaging your home. You want enough clearance behind it and on each side of the porch swing to move around safely and avoid the chains rubbing against it.
