"Paul and his team were extremely professional, meticulous, easy to work with, and kind. They arrived early each day, put in long hours, and paid attention to details that even I had not noticed! They went above and beyond to make our house look like a brand new home— from carefully caulking cracks, painting window shutters and the garage and front door columns too. Paul checked in with questions along the way that showed how conscientious he is— from painting an exterior AC unit (an eyesore previously) to the exterior foundational wall color selection and even removing gunk around a basement window— he took his time and the work was thorough and beautiful. We requested that he strip paint from one of the columns holding up our deck to match the other columns and the result is amazing— looks exactly like the others. On top of all this, the team got the job done in great time! Not at all rushed but impressively efficient. I can't recommend Olde English Painting enough. All our neighbors keep saying our house looks so beautiful!"

"I got a handful of quotes for this job. Target was the highest, but they impressed us with all the talk of leaving the job site totally clean. Gene went into detail about how they would cover everything, keep paint off the bushes and screens, etc. We decided to go with the pricier option to have everything done well. We did receive a discount to let them start the next week, but they never showed. After calling at the end of the week, they said they'd come to power wash on Sunday. Then when no one showed on Monday, I called and was told they would come Weds. They came Tuesday and I had to pick the color (I had already picked the 3 samples to do) old have been stuck waiting for me I guess? They painted the whole house in 2 days and finished loading the ladders on day 2 in the dark, which meant no one took a look around. The next morning I found paint on the lawn, bushes, driveway, garage floor, deck, and a couple screens. There was painters tape wads found all around the house. There was still painters tape on some things on the house! The definition between trim and house is not that well done. I'm not a painter and I could have done a better job. There are drips of white trim paint on the gray house sections. There was a whole section the front that had to be re-painted as the fade pattern of the old paint was still visible (despite two coats of paint?) Upon complaining, they did return and pick up, paint the deck spots, try to fix some other areas, and took a screen out to replace it. It took another phone call the next week to get the screen returned. Overall it's not the worst paint job, and if I had paid a bargain price I probably would have just thought "Well, you get what you pay for," but in this case I paid a lot for sloppy work. I will not use this company again. The pictures below are from today - just a few examples. Paint on the foundation, not a great job on the trim lines, paint chips all over, and there is literally still painters tape up. *UPDATE* After reading my review on Angie's List, the project manager called me to talk about the problems. He was very professional about it and sent a crew out (a different crew finally) to take care of touching up the paint and rehanging the shutters so that they were no longer crooked. They re-stained the deck at no cost to make up for all the problems. The final result was good, even if it doesn't completely erase all the headache that lead up to it. I did appreciate Yuri's desire to address everything until we were satisfied. He followed up until the job was done and assured me that the issues were addressed within the company. Was our situation a fluke? Perhaps. His desire to convert us to happy customers says a lot about the integrity of the company."

"Our house was in desperate need of exterior paint, and the shingles were in bad shape. We got a lot of estimates, but Brian seemed the most knowledgeable and the most reasonable in terms of cost. He and his crew were very professional and, even better, very responsive to our texts and phone calls (something that is unusual in any contractor). This is the first time we've had to have a house painted, and naturally we had a lot of questions. Brian was extremely patient with us and answered all our questions and offered us aesthetic advice as well, that always ended up being the right thing to do! He even helped us pick out the right stain for our stairs, by buying samples himself and painting examples on different steps. He was also very accommodating when we added a few things to the initial job (replacing a broken window pane, painting/staining our back deck) or changed our minds about other things. The condition of our house and unpredictable weather made the job take longer than expected, but the crew head, Alex, took the time to do everything right. When we had concerns, Brian always addressed them immediately, and those that he couldn't address right away due to weather or other circumstances, he promised to address at a later date. We have found very few contractors that are so flexible and willing to work with the client to get the job done right. We love the way our house looks (as do the neighbors!), and we highly recommend Brian."

"Derrick arrived on time to assess the deck. He was very professional, personable, and accommodating. Our deck was in tough shape but he worked with us to stay within our budget and still not cut any corners. We were more than pleased with his work and being very punctual ."

Small jobs welcome

"I found Als Painting in Plymouth MA on Homeadvisor.com and was immediately impressed with the amount of positive reviews. Al was one of 3 quotes I received to do my home, deck and a few other small items. His pricing was competitive, he was funny, on time, a nice person and very honest. Although it was his busy time he actually completed my project ahead of schedule and for exactly what he quoted w/ no surprises at all. Al was very concerned with my satisfaction so we did a detailed walk around before the left. My home and deck look brand-new again and I would highly recommend Al"

"Quick turn around, had a steady flow of working staff there as soon as we said go! Was detaildled in the process of what would happen first. Powerwash, a couple days drying, prep, hole filling and caulk, prime, brush coat and then final coat sparyed on. Personally, I took care of some minor repair while they continued to work on the overall house. Competitively priced! Great job."

Deck Staining questions, answered by experts

Yes, staining or sealing a cedar deck or fence is highly recommended to extend its lifespan, typically by five to 10 years. While cedar is naturally resistant to mold and mildew, it can still fall victim to moisture, sun exposure, and rot over time. Applying a treatment creates a protective shield that helps prevent splintering, fading, and decay, preserving the wood's strength and appearance. A combination stain and sealer often provides the best protection, as it soaks into the wood grain rather than just sitting on top. This offers superior defense against UV damage and rot and lasts longer than a sealer alone. To maintain the wood's natural look, consider using a near-translucent stain. You should plan to reapply the stain or sealer every two to three years.

Choosing the right product involves understanding deck material, desired finish, and local weather conditions. Opt for high-quality, weatherproof formulations ensuring long-term durability and appearance retention.

Costs depend on coating type, labor, site preparation, and required finishes.

When choosing between deck stain or paint, knowing what will last longer is important. Deck paint lasts longer than deck stain. With deck paint, you can get up to 10 years of coverage before you need to reapply. With deck stain, that time is significantly shorter at two to three years

Whether you can paint over your existing paint depends on what’s on there. Most of the time, you’ll want to sand down or scrape off the paint that’s currently coating your surface. Epoxy paint, for example, won’t let new paint stick to the surface. Latex paint is more forgiving and will accept a new coat, but a primer is recommended if you’re switching colors.
