"Bruce did an excellent job taking care of our bat problem! We were nervous about having one in our home but felt immediately at easy as soon as he came and explained what he was going to do. He sealed up our entire house after getting the bat out and we have not had a problem since. We truly appreciated his professionalism and attention to detail. We would recommend him any day!"

"We found these guys online, and at first we were thrilled because they responded quickly and came right out. After our appointment with them I looked up their website and felt uneasy with having paid them because one of the reviews came from the salesman who had come to my home (who was a very nice young man) and the other came from the gentleman who responded to my original email inquiry. We were even more uneasy when we heard a friend of our complain that his pest control service cost him $500. After speaking with an Angie's List representative, we found out that the price we were given was extremely high for the work they were going to be doing."

Bird Control questions, answered by experts

Look for goose repellents that contain the ingredient methyl anthranilate. This is a natural chemical found in grape juice. In human food, it’s often used as grape flavoring. With geese, it’s highly irritating. Grape Kool-Aid contains methyl anthranilate, the active ingredient in most bird repellents. It won’t harm geese, but it will deter them.

Woodpeckers may seek out homes with aluminum siding or tin roofs because these surfaces echo their drumming. Homes with wood siding are more frequently targeted as roosting areas or for food sources. If you have insects living in the exposed wood in your home, the birds are likely looking for a snack, in which case your best option is to hire an exterminator.

No, you shouldn’t have to worry about bats in your yard as long as they don’t make their way inside your house. Typically, bats hang around backyards in order to consume bugs, especially if they’re located in the U.S. Bats that are native to North America can consume more than 500 bugs per hour, so they may actually benefit your yard if mosquitoes are prevalent.

When it comes to keeping birds from doing their business on your porch rails, you have several DIY options and home remedies you can try:

  • Tie a fishing line from one end of the deck post to the other. Birds won’t be able to see the line across the railing, so they can’t land on it.

  • Hang wind chimes close by, which may scare birds away.

  • Apply a bird gel repellent to the railings, which contains smells that birds generally don’t like. Or, similarly, you can apply citronella or lemon oil around the railings, since birds don’t like strong smells.

Some animals, such as bats or birds, will be able to get out of chimneys on their own since they can fly. Other animals, however, may have a harder time and will require the help of a professional to escape. Squirrels and raccoons in particular may become stuck inside a chimney, especially if you have a buildup of soot or creosote inside. This can prevent them from being able to climb out, in which case you’ll need to call an animal control expert to help remove them.
