"Nelson and his assistant were excellent. They repaired several holes that an electrician had left in my bathroom wall drywall. They were efficient and left the walls with nice smooth surfaces and cleaned up when the job was done. I highly recommend NE Plastering and Painting!"

"Gary is very pleasant and professional to work with. Communication is great, pricing is fair and the quality of his work is top notch. The project he completed for me was taping/finishing the drywall in my 1500 sq ft 3 bedroom apartment with 9' ceilings. He was able to complete the job (and a few extra patches) in about 5/6 days by himself. Finished product is perfect and would definitely hire him again for any future work. Gary is very easy to work with and would recommend him to anyone looking for drywall work."

"Mr. Aponte is a true craftsman and professional. We needed a bedroom ceiling replaced and window framing, trim work done. Mr. Aponte reached out quickly and was able to visit us for a quote in a short amount of time. His pricing was very fair and he had a very creative solution to our problem. Mr. Aponte was an excellent communicator both on site and by phone. He always showed up exactly when he said he would. It was very much appreciated! Our ceiling is absolutely perfect. Now, you can’t tell that any work was done at all, and I am pretty picky. His craftsmanship is incredible. He also pointed out some problems that a different installer had made which allowed us to have our window re-insulated and waterproofed. That will save us so much money in heating costs and potential insect, water damage—he has a real heart for his clients and wants to make sure their house is perfect as possible. We will be hiring Mr. Aponte again for additional projects very soon, thank you so much!"

Drywall questions, answered by experts

The tool you use to sand plaster will depend on the size of the project. If you’re just working on a small section of your wall to get rid of an uneven spot on the surface, hand-sanding might work. However, for larger projects, a drywall sander can make a huge difference when it comes to both time and elbow grease—and an orbital sander can help for detailed areas such as around ceiling fans.

Drywall can be toxic to the environment and to humans in some cases. As drywall breaks down in a landfill and comes in contact with other organic chemicals, it can create hydrogen sulfide gas or leach into the groundwater. Additionally, the CDC recommends methods for controlling the inhalation of drywall dust when handled. While the common ingredients of drywall—gypsum, silica, and mica—are naturally occurring, they can cause irritation in some humans.

Yes, drywall nail pops are a common occurrence in homes, both new and old, resulting from the settling and shifting of the structure over time. Though not present in every room or on every wall, encountering nail pops in different sections of a home is not unusual, particularly if the temperature, humidity, or foundation has experienced changes.

Both plaster and drywall are durable wall finishes, but they differ significantly in installation, cost, performance, and aesthetics.

Installation & Cost: Drywall installation is faster and more affordable, typically costing $1.50 to $3 per square foot. It uses premade sheets, making it a more accessible DIY project. Plastering is a labor-intensive craft that requires specialized skills, pushing costs to $2 to $10 per square foot. It involves applying a wet paste over a lath framework.

Durability & Performance: Plaster is generally more durable, longer-lasting, and provides superior soundproofing. It is also a better insulator, which can help reduce energy costs. Drywall is easier to remove for future renovations.

Aesthetics: Drywall provides a smooth, uniform surface ready for paint or texture. Plaster offers a high-end, naturally textured look that can hide imperfections and is often preferred for achieving a classic or historic aesthetic.

Which is better? The choice depends on your priorities. Drywall is ideal for those prioritizing a lower upfront cost, faster installation, and DIY potential. Plaster is the better option for a higher-end project where durability, soundproofing, and a unique, premium finish are more important than the initial cost.

There are some instances when you can use extra drywall in your garden. Ideally, unused scraps of new drywall are best for amending soil without the concern of additional chemicals or mold. However, drywall with paint, mold, or potential asbestos requires specialized disposal by a professional and should be kept out of your garden.
