Small jobs welcome

"We highly recommend Clukey Construction. We hired Clukey Construction to demolish an old 12x34 ft deck with screenroom area and build a new 12x18 ft deck, as well as frame and install a new exterior door just inside our bulkhead door in the basement, and install a new bathroom exhaust fan and vent it through the roof. The estimate Shawn provided was thorough, accurate, and fell right within the range this type of project should cost. He kept in contact with us from beginning to end and made sure that we were well informed throughout the entire project. Shawn and Neil are extremely professional and hard working. They were onsite everyday as long as weather permitted until the job was complete. Everyday they made sure our property was tidy and safe before leaving. Their attention to detail is impeccable, every cut is precise and fits together tightly. Shawn answered all our questions and was always timely in responding to us. I can't say enough positive things about Clukey Construction and we will definitely be calling them for future projects."

"I was very pleased with the service I received. The locksmith was friendly, did a great job, and went the extra mile to adjust some doors he worked on that were not closing properly. I also found the price to be very reasonable. Terrific experience all around!"

Doors questions, answered by experts

A front door lasts between 20 and 100 years, or an average of 30 years. How long it lasts depends on the type of material, the environment, and how well you maintain it. A door with coverage over it will last longer than one exposed to the elements. Using high-quality paint or sealants can also help extend the life of your front door. Wood front doors tend to have shorter lifespans than other materials.

Yes, barn doors can be too heavy, although the limitation is usually imposed by the mounting hardware you buy and not your home’s framing, unless you’re building an unusually wide door. To keep the weight down, you can opt for 1-by material rather than 2-by material, and choose a softwood like pine rather than a hardwood like maple or oak. Check the weight limits on your mounting hardware, and always attach your door track to studs rather than to drywall anchors.

Wood is by no means the only type of front door material on the market. You can also choose from several other options, including:

  • Aluminum: Low-maintenance and affordable, but lacks insulation

  • Fiberglass: Offers excellent insulation and durability for a decent price

  • Glass: Offers beauty but less security or insulation, and a higher price tag

  • Steel: One of the most economical options if you’re looking for affordability, low maintenance, high security levels, and a door that will last

  • Wrought iron: Attractive and secure, but costly and heavy

Not every door can be converted into a pocket door. Pocket doors require specific hardware and a hollow space within the wall to slide into when open. The door must be sturdy enough to handle the sliding mechanism but not too heavy, as excessive weight can cause operation and track alignment issues. While some standard interior doors can be adapted for use as pocket doors with the right hardware, it's essential to ensure the door's compatibility and the structural feasibility of creating a pocket in the wall.

You don’t need to have a door at the top of basement stairs, but having one is usually a good idea. Not only will the door block the view of the basement, which might serve as a play area or less appealing workout space, but it can also prevent children or pets from going downstairs, as well as accidental falls.
