"Professional crew; work was done quickly, with minimal disruption and fairly good cleanup. The house is older and the crew chief took reviewed the interior carefully to insure there would be no damage to the walls in the insulation process."

"Coleman did a wonderful job on our remodel. They did spray foam on the roof of the entire house and installed bats to insulate the walls of our demo'd side. They also had to remove old bats in half of the attic. They were very clean in the disposal of the old insulation and clean up of the overall job when they were done. Communication was great from the start...Shant was very communicative from the initial estimate through to the completion of the job. They were very competitively priced I'd recommend to anyone looking for an insulation contractor."

"Clean Tech Construction was terrific! The team arrived slightly before the scheduled time, removed the old, poorer quality insulation, installed new insulation, including areas that a previous company had not been able to reach, and cleaned up everything before they left for the day. When I initially contacted them about the work, they answered my phone calls within 15 minutes and continued to respond to any calls/questions quickly and politely. I would hire them again in a heartbeat."

Insulation questions, answered by experts

Yes, insulating ductwork in a crawl space is a worthwhile investment, especially if you live in a colder climate or run your air conditioning for most of the year. Uninsulated ducts can lose up to 30% of their heating and cooling efficiency, which can significantly impact your electricity bill. The project is a relatively small investment and typically only takes a few hours. It's a particularly simple add-on if you are already hiring someone to insulate the entire crawl space. An added benefit is that insulated ducts put off less hot or cold air, making them less attractive to pests.

You do not always need to remove old insulation before adding new. If the existing insulation is in good condition—not wet, physically damaged, moldy, or infested with pests—you can add new insulation directly on top of it for a compounding effect. You can also mix different types, such as adding blown-in insulation around existing fiberglass batts.

However, removal is recommended if the old insulation is compromised by water damage or pests. You should also remove it if you plan to install a different type of insulation, like switching from roll or batt insulation to spray foam. If the existing insulation is very old or damaged, you will likely get more benefit from removing it and starting fresh.

Not necessarily. A higher R-value simply means that the insulation has a higher heat resistance and performs better in terms of how much heat passes through the material. This can be better for some homes, or it can be too high of an R-value for other homes. Again, your climate zone determines whether the insulation is better for your home.

Cellular shades, also known as honeycomb shades, are the most energy-efficient and insulating window treatments. Their honeycomb structure is made of soft fabric that forms layered cell pockets. These pockets trap air, creating a thermal barrier that reduces heat loss in the winter and blocks heat gain in the summer. For even greater insulation, consider double- or triple-cell varieties. Side-tracked cellular shades, which seal the edges of the window frame, can further minimize air leaks and maximize energy efficiency.

When it comes to fiberglass insulation versus foam board, there are a few notable differences, both aesthetically and functionally. Fiberglass insulation is soft and flexible, meaning it can be squeezed into tight spaces more easily than foam board. Fiberglass insulation also has a higher R-value, making it a better pick for colder climates. However, foam board insulation can resist moisture and pest damage much better than fiberglass.
