Small jobs welcome

"I hired Midas painting for an exterior paint job on my large Queen Ann home that was about 10 years overdue . Lots of peeling paint and odds and ends carpentry work. I was extremely happy with the result. The house looks beautiful now. Brad, the owner is very easy to work with and is responsive to any issues that come up. His team is wonderful--very friendly, meticulous, in their painting and showed up when they said they would. There was a decent amount of carpentry work that needed to be done (he has his own carpenter on the team ) and it was all done very well , with no cost surprises. Highly recommend."

"They did other work besides brick work! Installed a basement window, a retractable screen door, outside railing. Extremely satisfied with work done! Pricing was good! Time frame was less than expected! They cleaned up, left no trash! I would highly recommend them! Workers were very polite!' Osvaldo stayed on top of everything! I can't say enough! I would definitely use them again."

"I had some significant wood wet rot underneath a door that had gone into the sill. Lenny did a fantastic job repairing the sill and all the framing around it, installing water barriers and metal flashing, and making sure we never have this problem again. Lenny is responsive, honest, and does high quality work. He checked in with me at various steps along the way, clearly explained what work he was going to do and why, and was always conscientious of the financial cost to me. Lenny will be my go to person for future house repairs and renovation projects!"

"Osmin and his team did a great job replacing our triple-decker back porch. He worked with an architect, that he found, to make sure there were no variances required. This made the permitting process quicker. It was a tricky job because building codes have changed since the porch was first built."

Carpentry questions, answered by experts

Your local building code will list all the framing requirements for whatever type of structure you're building. Most exterior walls require spacing of 16 inches on-center, while many non-load-bearing interior walls only require 24 inches of spacing. However, there are also varying requirements depending on your construction material, so checking your municipality's rules is essential.

When building a house, it is customary to use 16d nails that measure 3 1/2 inches in length to construct the frame. These nails are crucial in providing the necessary support and stability for structural elements like joists and studs, which ensures a sturdy framework.

You can choose 5/8-inch plywood or 3/4-inch plywood—anything thinner than these sizes may not withstand the impact of debris propelled by strong winds or can be easily torn off by intruders. Remember that the durability of the wood board is crucial, particularly for safeguarding your windows during severe storms. The effectiveness of using wood boards for protecting the investment you made in your home relies on using the appropriate material and ensuring proper installation.

There are a variety of second-story deck privacy ideas depending on your budget and aesthetic. For starters, you might consider fencing or tall privacy railing that masks a good portion of the open deck. A pergola or an awning can provide additional cover and shade. Outdoor curtains are an easy way to add or remove privacy at your convenience, plus they’re a wallet-friendly way to decorate your deck.

Begin by analyzing the blueprints and gathering the proper materials before framing a house. With the prep stages behind you, begin by framing the floor of a house on the newly set foundation. Exterior and interior walls come next, along with rough openings for doors and windows. Contractors will then add ceiling and roof rafters to finish things off.
