Customers say: Quick response

"Roy was a lifesaver! On a Saturday night I realized my house keys went missing and I got an almost immediate response when I reached out. I made an appointment with him for the morning and he called 15 min prior to tell me he was on his way. When he arrived he was a few minutes early. He had my condo door unlocked in less than 5 minutes and I thought what he charged me, for a house call on Easter Sunday, was very fair. I really appreciated how responsive and reliable Roy was. I will definitely recommend him next time someone I know needs a locksmith."

"Dave Smith was AWESOME! Very knowledgeable and patient. We added new items to our order at the 12th hour and he came back twice to make sure that everything was completed as we desired. We also had Alarm Protection Group secure our office. Dave Smith and Co. make the process very easy-Highly recommended."

"We are so grateful we found Bob for our mother's handyman services. He took our lenghty repair list and took the time to go through item by item and explain the different options and price points for each repair/replace, then gave us his professional opinion on how to proceed. His work is fantastic. He's friendly, professional, and knowledgeable. We will absolutely hire him again."

Locksmiths questions, answered by experts

As with any computer, smart locks can be hacked by someone with the technical skills to do so, but most people do not have that ability, making smart locks relatively safe. If you have any concerns about a compromised smart lock, opt for an encrypted smart lock, change your Wi-Fi password, and make sure that you only give out your password to trusted family and friends.

Several types of deadbolts are available, including single-cylinder, double-cylinder, rim, smart, and electronic deadbolt locks. The most common type found in U.S. homes is the single-cylinder deadbolt, which uses a key on the exterior and a thumb turn on the interior. A double-cylinder deadbolt features two locking mechanisms and requires a key to be operated from both the inside and the outside.

Yes, you should change the locks as soon as you can after completing the purchase of a house. This is a matter of privacy and security, as you have no idea how many copies of the keys the previous owner made. You can change the locks yourself or hire a pro to replace or rekey the lock, which costs $50 to $100.

Most jobs take 30 minutes to 2 hours, but high-security systems or multiple lock installations may require additional time.

If you don’t have your original key, the easiest way to obtain a copy is to call a locksmith. For house keys, your locksmith has several options for configuring a new key:

  • They can input a lock’s identification code into a database to obtain key-cutting instructions.

  • They could analyze the lock cylinder to determine how to cut a new key.

  • They can create an impression of the lock cylinder from which to cut a new key.
