Once the animals and their young are out of the house, remove the nest and locate any entry points. Some may be difficult to find because some animals can fit through very small holes. Once you’ve located as many entry points as possible, use materials such as metal or masonry to block off the entry. Ideally, you should choose materials that most animals cannot chew through. Create a one-way door or flap to allow animals to leave but not return. Gophers are ubiquitous in certain areas, and the only way to completely get rid of them is to put down gopher wire two feet below the surface of your soil and vertically along the edges of your yard. Unfortunately, this may not be a practical solution unless you’re completely redoing your yard or installing an aboveground garden. Alternatively, you may consider putting underground rock barriers around the edge of your yard to discourage gopher visits. However, you’ll still likely get some pests because they can dig as deep as 6 feet below the surface.

The best way to permanently get rid of skunks is by setting up deterrents around your property to keep skunks out. Get rid of skunks permanently by:

  • Not leaving food or water outside

  • Installing a motion-sensor sprinkler system

  • Installing fencing that’s at least 3 feet high and a foot deep

  • Adding motion-sensor lights in the yard

  • Cleaning up brush, sticks, woodpiles, and leaves on your property so skunks can’t use the materials for a nest

  • Seal up cracks and holes around your property to prevent skunks from building a den

  • Placing fresh lemon peels around the perimeter of your home

If you find a tick inside crawling in the house, remember not to just step on it or try to crush it. Ticks have hard bodies and it’s hard to kill them this way. Instead, pick it up with toilet paper and flush it. You can also place it in a sealed bag, or kill it by placing it in alcohol. 

Gel bait and gel bait traps use poison to kill cockroaches, and aren’t safe to use around pets. Many gel bait traps are called “child-resistant,” but this only means that the traps are hard to rip open for children. Large pets and children are still able to swallow them. If you use gel bait, use it in areas where pets and children can’t access them, such as under a washing machine. Another option is to use glue traps, which don’t contain pesticides and are safe to use around pets.
