"I recently hired Homefree Fences to install a wooden privacy fence, and they were fantastic! Their communication was super clear, and they gave me a straightforward quote and timeline. The fence they installed is not only sturdy but also looks great. What really impressed me was their friendly and customer-focused approach. "KC Fence did an amazing job with my project. KC Fence removed a wooden fence that was 35 years old and replaced it with new fencing. From beginning to end, KC Fence did an outstanding job. The estimate that I received was fair and the job was completed on schedule. My new white vinyl picket fence and a welded wire fence were both installed and also completed on schedule. Both fences had gates. A welded wire fence gate is very difficult to construct and KC Fence outperformed my expectations. Both of the new gates are sturdy and attractive. My fencing looks fabulous and I was very pleased with KC Fence's skill and high commitment to customer service. I highly recommend KC Fence."

Fencing questions, answered by experts

The most common hog wire gauge for a fence is 12.5. However, you can choose from a few gauges based on your needs. While 12.5 is a reliable gauge for penning in large, strong animals, 9 gauge is a better option of you have large animals that are easily spooked, such as horses. For smaller animals, like dogs or pigs, you can use a 16 gauge hog wire.

Painting or staining protects fences from environmental damage, enhances durability, and improves curb appeal with a fresh, customized look.

There are many pros and cons to vinyl and composite fencing. Both fencing types offer longer lifespans than wood fencing, with some notable advantages. Whether one is better for you will depend on a few factors. Composite is better if you prefer recycled materials, while vinyl is extremely easy to clean.

Also, consider the disadvantages: vinyl can be more expensive, while composite fencing fades during the first six months.

Whether you need a permit to build or install a fence depends on several factors, including your location, the fence's height, its placement in your yard, and the materials used. In many cities and highly populated areas, a permit is required, especially for fences taller than 6 feet. Conversely, rural areas may have fewer restrictions. Typically, backyard privacy fences 6 feet or shorter do not require a permit, while front yard fences often have a lower height limit, sometimes as low as 3.5 feet. There can also be exceptions for properties in mixed residential-commercial zones. It's best to check with your local building inspection or zoning department to understand the specific requirements, height restrictions, and location rules for your area. A professional fence installer can help you navigate this process and often secure the necessary permits for you, though this may extend the project timeline.

There are two things you can do to make a fence replacement easier—but keep in mind that easier doesn’t mean better. First, you can use a jack or some other type of machinery to pull the post out of the ground. If that’s not available, a digging bar can help.

Second, you can backfill the hole with gravel rather than creating a concrete footing. Keep in mind, gravel is less secure. You should only use it if you’re installing a lightweight fence or have heavier, clay soil.
