Small jobs welcome

"We originally spoke with Tyler regarding what we were looking for. He communicated clearly and in a timely manner. The work job consisted of numerous ceiling lights, ceiling fans installed. Recessed lighting, updated. New outlets added. A large screen TV hung on the wall. Tyler was very professional and courteous throughout the work being completed. The work area was maintained and kept clean after each job was completed. Tyler performed quality work. We will definitely be reaching out again for any electrical work in the future."

"This is my 3rd (or 4th?) experience with Northern Lights Electric, and it certainly won't be my last. They arrived on time (7am), worked quickly and efficiently, and were done much sooner than I expected. They also cleaned up when they were done. Steven was also very willing to answer questions and explain some things, as well as give me information on some potential future services I was considering. I just requested an appointment for a ceiling fan installation and recessed lighting. Definitely my go-to for any electrical issues."

"Jason and his team upgraded and replaced the electrical panels, meter sockets, and most of the outlets at a multi-family property I own. They did incredible, clean, safe work. And even communicated with the tenants! They made everything easy, and the inspection passed with flying colors. Incredible job!"

"They totally gutted my small bathroom, took care of the obstacles in between, and have created a beautiful room every which way. Once we took down the original wall, the water damage that I suspected was confirmed. At my request, they replaced that wall totally, including the outside shingles.  When we discovered there wasn't enough room for the recessed mirror, they were able to move the plumbing pipes.  I have never done anything like this before.  Jane directed me each step of the way so I could make one decision at a time.  She came with me when picking tile;  she has wonderful creative classy ideas.  The tile work throughout my bathroom is stunning, from the placement of the tile line, to how the niches are built, to the contrast from the floor to the walls.  She also directed me on the vanity top, which also embellishes this room. They moved planks in the ceiling so the overhead lighting would work.  The lights in the kitchen are beautifully placed, and the ceiling plaster was done in a way that you would never know the change.  I was impressed again and again with the professionalism. When the plastering on the wall did not come out as intended, they took full responsibility, and repainted the entire hallway without any extra expense.  Jane puts together a very reasonable budget and schedule, and then communicates extremely well throughout the process.  The workmen are very neat and tidy.

Ceiling Fans questions, answered by experts

The direction your ceiling fan spins helps create comfortable airflow in your home and can also help cut down on energy costs.

During summer, your ceiling fan should spin counterclockwise. This will push cooler air downward in a column and help lower your room’s air temperature. In the winter, set your ceiling fan to spin clockwise and at the lowest speed setting. This will pull cool air upwards, displacing the warm air that pools towards the top of your ceiling and bringing it down towards the floor.

Fan power is measured by CFM, or cubic feet per minute. For every 1,000 feet of square footage in your attic, you need a minimum of 700 CFM. Steeper roofs may need larger fans or about 840 CFM.  You can figure the size of attic fan you need by multiplying the square footage of your attic floor by 0.7. (multiply by 1.2 for a steep roof and 1.15 for a dark roof). That number is the CFM required for your fan to run efficiently.

The number of blades for your fan poses both advantages and disadvantages. Typically, the more blades on a fan, the better the air distribution and cooling effect, but this also means that your fan will have more wear on its motor. For small rooms, three-blade fans should work fine. For larger areas like living rooms, four or five-blade fans might be the better option.

Though possible, installing a ceiling fan yourself requires electrical knowledge and confidence working with home wiring. Following the manufacturer's instructions carefully and observing safety precautions are crucial components of a DIY installation.

Most ceiling fans have a lifespan of anywhere from five to 15 years or 10 years on average. Just how long your ceiling fan lasts depends on the quality of the parts, how much it’s used, and how well you maintain it. A fan with a weak motor that runs on the medium setting nonstop is likely to have a shorter lifespan compared to a fan with a powerful motor that runs on the slowest setting for air circulation.
