Customers say: True professional

"From the first contact with Gary Locatelli Smith I knew I was in the hands of a professional with a long history of great customer service and experience in the trade. He answered my email and phone call within two days, and set up an appointment to come to my home within a week. I showed him the fabric I had purchased and wanted to use and after he gave me a quote on the cost for two sofa slipcovers I readily agreed and he started cutting and measuring the slipcovers on the spot. I provided the material so I only paid for labor. He did a wonderful job on the slipcovers, which fit to perfection. I originally wanted a certain style of slipcover, but he made other recommendations based on the material that I provided and I am so happy I agreed to it. In addition to the two slipcovers he also upholstered a bench using beautiful nail heads and reupholstered a day bed. I was satisfied with the time it took and would use him again anytime! P.S. Nine years ago I paid double for 2 sofa slipcovers using another service, which is why I didn't use them again. Locatelli Smith Interiors had my business as soon as I met Gary and he gave me the quote. He stuck to the quote and did a great job! He knows what he is doing! I couldn't be happier to have found a great upholsterer!"

"Amazing!! Dave was quick to respond initially. Once we hired him, he kept in contact throughout the process. He was very professional and went above and beyond what we expected. The furniture looks brand new. We are 100% satisfied and would highly recommend him to others. Thank you Dave for taking such good care of our antique furniture that was a wedding gift to our parents."

"I have a family member who is disabled, and spends most of her time in a particular upholstered chair. The seat cushion on that chair these days was not very supportive. Yesterday my relative was out at a doctor's appointment, so I called Landry Home Decorating and spoke with Mary. I explained the situation, and asked if they might have some time either Monday (yesterday) or Weds (when Eleanor would also be away from the house) to put a new insert in the cushion while I waited. Mary checked to see if they had the right materials and enough time to complete the job. Then she said if I wanted to, I could come in right away. So! I snatched the seat cushion off the comfy chair and hopped in the car. Mary arranged for someone to take the cushion and do the work while I waited. I browsed their extensive "library" of upholstery fabric sample books, and before I knew it, the cushion was ready! Really, it couldn't have taken much more than 15 minutes, 20 at the most. I had paid while the cushion was being worked on, so as soon as it was ready, I dashed out the door for home. Luck was with me, I was able to get in and get the cushion back in place before Eleanor made it upstairs and headed for her chair. It was a nice surprise for her. So, thank you to John Landry, and Mary, and the helper who put the new insert into the cushion. You were all friendly, helpful and efficient, and really made my day. I'm attaching a picture of Eleanor in her chair, after the cushion was put back in place. She's a happy camper! Thanks again for helping make this happen."

Upholstering questions, answered by experts

When planning upholstery projects in Gloucester, consider the timing—late spring or early fall helps avoid peak humidity and harsh winter dampness. Homes near the harbor benefit from marine upholstery materials to withstand salt air. If you live in a historic district, check for preservation guidelines that may influence fabric selection. Specialty materials may require extra lead time due to fewer local suppliers, especially during the busy tourist season when professionals are in high demand.

Helpful?

In Gloucester, sunroom and porch furniture are most vulnerable due to direct exposure to salty air and sunlight. Living room seating with harbor views, kitchen chairs near open windows, and bedroom pieces close to the shoreline often show early signs of wear. Basements in older homes can suffer from persistent dampness, while entryway benches are frequently exposed to wet, salty shoes and gear. Antique furniture in historic homes also requires special marine upholstery care.

Helpful?

In Gloucester, leaving windows open during foggy or stormy weather allows salt spray to settle on fabrics, accelerating wear. Using standard cleaners can strip away marine-grade finishes. Failing to run a dehumidifier encourages mold growth. Placing damp beach towels or swimwear on upholstered furniture introduces extra moisture and salt. Skipping regular vacuuming lets abrasive salt particles grind into fibers, while neglecting to remove pet hair can trap additional moisture and debris.

Helpful?

In Gloucester’s coastal climate, promptly wipe away salt residue using distilled water and a mild soap, then dry thoroughly to prevent moisture buildup. Use a dehumidifier to minimize fabric mildew, and gently trim frayed threads—never pull, as salt exposure weakens fibers. Rotate cushions exposed to harbor breezes to prevent uneven fading. For stubborn stains or if you notice frame damage, contact a local marine upholstery specialist for expert care.

Helpful?

After finishing an upholstery project in Gloucester, keep all fabric and foam samples, care instructions tailored for coastal conditions, and detailed receipts showing any marine upholstery treatments. Maintain before-and-after photos to document the work, and save any maintenance schedules provided by your upholsterer. These records are especially helpful for future repairs, insurance claims, and ensuring your furniture withstands Gloucester’s salt air and humidity over time.
