"I have worked with over a dozen A-rated companies on Angie's List, and the Narrow Lane is my favorite. We have worked with them consistently for over 5 years. They are reliable, diligent, and very talented. I have spoken many times with the crew members and know that the Narrow Lane pays fair wages and respects all labor and finance laws. Here is a story: when heavy snow tipped one of our giant arborvitae over, the snowplow crew noticed. Before we even asked for help, the owner of the Narrow Lane was on site to assess the problem. His crew righted the tree immediately and saved its root system, also saving us a lot of money. The company has the intimacy of a small business, but I have been surprised by the breadth of their capabilities. They have a landscape architect with decades of experience. Many of the team members have a deep knowledge of botany. They have heavy equipment and take care of stonework and landscape lighting. If you hire the Narrow Lane for snow removal, the operations director will send you an email before EVERY winter storm discussing the forecast and the company's plan for your property. You can call or email them at any time to modify the plan based on your needs, for example, your work schedule. In summary, the Narrow Lane is a high-performing company that adheres to its principles and will take very good care of you and your property!"

"Chris did an excellent job! I got many different quotes through companies from Google and HomeAdvisor but felt Chris could do the job the best. He took out an old walkway, built a new walkway down a different area in my front yard then added a new retaining wall and granite steps from my driveway to my front door. He also put in a circle kit near my front door and put in a granite mailbox post. Everything came out perfect! Chris is a very hard worker, great communicator and I am very satisfied with the work he did. I would hire him again!"

Asphalt Driveways questions, answered by experts

For a standard residential driveway in Gloucester, completing an asphalt paving project takes about three to five days. This includes one to two days for excavation, a day for base installation, and another for paving. However, unpredictable coastal weather, rocky soil, or access challenges on narrow historic streets can extend this timeline. The surface requires 24 to 48 hours to cure.

Helpful?

In Gloucester, MA, habits that damage asphalt include using rock salt instead of safer deicers and scraping the surface with metal snow shovels. Allowing automotive fluid spills to sit without cleanup also degrades the binder. Neglecting to fill small cracks allows water to penetrate, leading to significant damage from the area's severe freeze-thaw cycles and shortening the pavement's lifespan.

Helpful?

Homeowners in MA make several key decisions during the asphalt paving process. You will determine the asphalt's thickness, which is critical for withstanding freeze-thaw cycles, and select edge treatments like Belgian block. Input is also needed on grading to ensure proper water runoff away from your foundation and on the project's scheduling to work within optimal weather windows.

Helpful?

In a typical Gloucester home, asphalt paving work solves problems caused by the harsh coastal climate, including severe freeze-thaw damage and corrosion from sea salt. It also addresses poor drainage on properties with clay soils and manages stormwater from nor'easters. A properly paved surface improves winter accessibility for snow removal and enhances safety by eliminating trip hazards from uneven ground.

Helpful?

Before starting asphalt paving projects in Gloucester, contact the Department of Public Works about permits and schedule a utility marking through Dig Safe, as required by MA law. It's also important to assess site drainage, plan for potential rocky soil conditions common in the area, and coordinate material delivery to avoid delays from narrow streets or summer tourist traffic.
