"Very pleased with the work John and his foreman Dan did. Nothing better than freshly painted rooms by two professionals to liven up a home. John painted my fireplace, doors and dark woodwork as well. Lots of cutting in and trim work. I was having difficulty hiring a plumber to fix a broken sink faucet. John made a call and a plumber friend arrived that day. They were on time and did a fantastic job cleaning up every day. They even had to contend with a rude neighbor but took it in stride. Love the end result. Highly recommended."

"I would absolutely recommend Steven for plaster/drywall/paint projects. He removed tough Venetian plaster and prepared the walls for paint. The walls ended up being perfectly smooth. He was meticulous in his preparation and explained exactly what he was doing along the way. His was quite reasonable and he was very easy to work with. Highly recommended."

"Moreau Boas actually tore down my chimney from the roofline and up and did an outstanding job. Their quote was fair, their work was excellent, they finished the job on time and within budget, and they had a wonderful crew. One of the crew - Richard Gentry went out of his way to ensure the site was perfectly cleaned and spotless after the work was completed. I will gladly use them in the future for my roof and masonry needs."

Wall Repair FAQs, answered by experts

Costs range from $5,000 to $15,000, depending on size, material, and design complexity.

Proper design and construction prevent erosion and add structural stability to landscapes.

Railroad ties can be good for retaining walls, but it depends on the area. They have a desirable rustic look and are durable. The problem is they’re treated with creosote, a preservative the EPA says poses a risk to humans and wildlife. Over time, the preservative seeps out of the wood and into the ground. Many areas have banned the use of creosote-treated wood on residential properties. If your area does allow it, never use railroad ties near an edible garden or drinking water source. Instead, use wood that’s treated with an EPA-approved preservative or a wood-alternative composite material.

Depending on who you hire to build a retaining wall, the average cost, including demolition and reconstruction, for a 50-foot wall that's 4 feet in height is between $7,000 and $24,000.

Generally, a railroad tie retaining wall consisting of a single line of ties should be between 3 and 4 feet tall—and the height often tops out at around 6 feet. You can go taller, but you may need additional footings and reinforcements, including a second layer of railroad ties to support the added weight of the soil it’s holding back.
