"I just got my sliding doors fixed yesterday and boy they did a good job. I had a cancelled appointment first time around but these things happen. The guys came in for estimate but started working on the spot right away which was welcome because I didn't want to take a day off for another work. They were very nice and respectful and honest. "The house is from 1890 and John did a very nice job framing and the door and making it weather tight. Nice job on the flashing and painting. It was more complicated than planned and took two days. He left the work sight in good order overnight until he finished the job. e are very happy with the result."

You might be able to turn a normal door into a fire-rated door, but you’re better off purchasing one that meets all NFPA 80 standards. If you want to DIY a normal door into a fire door, you’ll need a self-adhesive intumescent seal, metal hinges, fire-resistant glazing, and a self-closing device, but you’re always better off buying a certified fire door.

You can open up more space between the door and the floor by sanding the bottom of the door, but it will take longer compared to using a hand planer. However, you could use a belt sander, which some believe is even better than a hand planer for planing a door. Also, it could leave a smoother finish on the bottom of the door.

You put shims between the three-sided frame to which the door hinges are attached and the framing of the rough wall opening. Using shims like this will center your door in the wall opening and allows you to make small adjustments to get your door plumb and level for smooth operation. Your shims and the gap they fill will be covered when you install door trim, so don’t worry too much about the appearance.

A slab door is a standalone door without a frame or hardware. A prehung door is a complete set that includes the door, frame, hinges, and sometimes the doorknob and lockset.

In most cases, a prehung door is the better and easier option to install, especially for DIY projects or exterior applications, as they often come pre-weatherproofed. They require fewer tools and less experience to install properly. Although prehung doors are heavier and have a higher upfront cost, the investment is often worthwhile for a complete upgrade that includes a new frame.

A slab door may be a better choice if you are on a tight budget, have a custom-sized wall opening, or only need to replace the door while keeping the existing frame. While the initial cost is lower, you will need to purchase all the hardware separately and do more DIY work to hang it, which may not result in significant time or money savings.

You want plenty of room between your pre-hung door and the framing in your wall to allow for shimming to get the door into the perfect position, so aim for about 1 inch on the top and both sides. That means you should make your rough opening about 1 inch taller and 2 inches wider than your pre-hung door. You’ll then use shims to stabilize and level the door before installing it.
